No. 12 Softball rolls to series sweep of Holy Names

The No. 12 Dixie State softball team rolled to a doubleheader sweep of Holy Names on Sunday, winning 14-3 in the first game and 12-1 in the second game.

The Trailblazers (18-3, 4-0 PacWest) turned 25 hits into 26 runs on the day to wrap up the four-game series sweep of the Hawks.

GAME ONE – Dixie State 14, Holy Names 3 (5 innings)

After a scoreless first inning, Dixie State erupted for six runs in the bottom of the second. The Trailblazers batted through the order and used RBI-doubles from Bailey Gaffin (Glendale, Ariz./Mountain Ridge HS) and Mallory Paulson (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument HS), along with four more hits and two HNU errors, to take a 6-0 advantage.

Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, Utah/Stansbury HS) sparked a two-out rally in the third inning with an RBI-double to left field. Bassett later stole home on a double-steal play, and Gaffin scored on a wild pitch to push the lead to 9-0.

Holy Names pulled a run back in the top of the fourth inning when Danielle Santoro drove a sacrifice fly to center field.

Like Bassett in the third inning, Kenzie Sawyer (Cedar City, Utah/Canyon View) delivered with two outs in the fourth, blasting a 2 RBI-double to the fence in left center field. Josey Hartman (Mapleton, Utah/Maple Mountain HS) doubled later in the inning, and Brenna Hinck (Tremonton, Utah/Bear River HS) tripled to left field as the Trailblazers scored five runs on four hits and two HNU errors to build the lead to 14-1.
The Hawks scored two runs in the top of the fifth, taking advantage of two hits and two DSU errors to trim the lead to the final tally of 14-3.

Alexis Barkwell (San Diego, Calif./North Medford HS) earned the win in the pitcher's circle, allowing two hits with three strikeouts in four innings of work. Paulson led the way at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI, while Bassett went 1-for-1 with an RBI and two walks.

GAME TWO – Dixie State 12, Holy Names 1 (5 innings)

Dixie State wasted no time building a lead in game two, scoring six runs on eight hits and two HNU errors in the bottom of the first inning to take a 6-0 lead. Bassett ripped a double down the left field line to open the inning, sparking a stretch of five consecutive DSU hits. Taylor Godfrey (Buckeye, Ariz./Estrella Foothills HS) capped the scoring in the inning with a triple to center field, bringing home Brenna Hinck (Tremonton, Utah/Bear River HS) from third.

Holy Names trimmed the lead to 6-1 in the top of the second when Nicolette Soares sent the 2-2 pitch over the wall in left field. But the Hawks would get no closer.

The Trailblazers duplicated their first-inning effort in the second inning, scoring six runs on six hits and two HNU errors. Paulson highlighted the rally, crushing a three-run home run to center field for DSU's first home run of the series. Godfrey and Bassett wrapped up the inning with RBI-singles to bring the lead to the final count of 12-1.

Alexandria Melendez (Moreno Valley, Calif./Valley View HS) earned the win in the pitcher's circle, tossing a two-hit gem with four strikeouts. Paulson led the offensive attack, going 2-for-2 with 3 RBI and a home run, while Bassett put the finishing touches on a solid day with a 2-for-3 performance and an RBI.

Dixie State will host Dominican in a PacWest doubleheader at 3 p.m. on Tuesday at Karl Brooks Field, before heading to Hawaii for a stretch of 10 games in a week.
