No. 12 Softball splits Tuesday DH with Dominican

The No. 12 Dixie State softball team (19-4, 5-1 PacWest) split a Pacific West Conference doubleheader with Dominican on Tuesday at Karl Brooks Field, winning game one, 14-9, before dropping a 6-5 decision in game two.

GAME ONE – Dixie State 14, Dominican 9

Dominican took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, turning two hits and one DSU error into the early advantage.

Dixie State responded with six runs on four hits and one DUC error in the bottom half of the inning to jump to a 6-3 lead. Bailey Gaffin (Glendale, Ariz./Mountain Ridge HS), Mallory Paulson (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument HS), and Dani Bartholf (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert HS) each recorded RBI-singles to highlight the six-run rally in the inning.

The Trailblazers added to the lead with one run in the third inning and five more in the fourth to build a 12-3 lead. Paulson and Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, Utah/Stansbury HS) led the run in the fourth, each logging 2 RBI-singles.

The Penguins would score two runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, but DSU added two runs in the sixth inning on RBI-singles by Gaffin and Jessica Gonzalez (Kingsburg, Calif./Kingsburg HS). The Trailblazers stopped the DUC rally in the seventh to earn the 14-9 victory.

Madi Dove (Cypress, Calif./Cypress HS) earned the win in the pitcher's circle, allowing nine hits and striking out three batters in 4.2 innings of work. Paulson led the way at the plate, going 3-for-4 with 3 RBI, while Gaffin added a 2-for-3 performance with 2 RBI.

GAME TWO – Dominican 6, Dixie State 5

Dominican opened the scoring in the third inning with a leadoff home run to left center to stake the Penguins to a 1-0 lead.

Dixie State answered in the bottom half of third with a Paulson RBI-single, followed by an Arista Honey (Bothell, Wash./Bothell HS) two-run blast to left field to take a 3-1 lead.

The lead was short-lived, as Dominican countered with five runs on four hits and one DSU error in the top of the fourth to regain the lead at 6-3.

The Trailblazers cut the lead to 6-5 in the sixth inning, when Riley Tyteca (Farmington, Utah/Viewmont HS) entered as a pinch hitter and sent the first pitch over the wall in center field for her first career home run. Bassett later singled in the inning, but was stranded at third base as the potential tying run.

Dixie State clamped down defensively in the top of the seventh, as Shelby Yung (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) made a catch in foul territory on a dead sprint to the wall on the third base side of the stadium. Gaffin followed the play with an over-the-shoulder catch in shallow right field. Alexis Barkwell (San Diego, Calif./North Medford HS) then closed the inning with a strikeout, fooling the DUC batter with a changeup to get the out.

DSU would then get a batter on first base in the bottom of the seventh, but was not able to advance the runner as Dominican clinched the 6-5 win.

The Trailblazers logged seven hits by seven different players in the loss, as Tyteca and Honey led the way. Barkwell tossed four solid innings in the circle, allowing just one hit after taking over in the fourth inning.

Dixie State now heads to the Hawaiian Islands for a stretch of 10 games in a week. The Trailblazers open with a doubleheader at Hawaii Hilo on Sunday, then play a four-game series with Chaminade next Tuesday and Wednesday. DSU will close the trip with a doubleheader at BYU-Hawaii next Friday, and a doubleheader at Hawaii Pacific next Sunday.
