No. 19 Softball drops 3-2 decision at UNLV Wednesday

The No. 19 Dixie State softball team dropped a 3-2 decision at UNLV on Wednesday in a non-conference matchup at Eller Media Stadium in Las Vegas.

The Trailblazers (30-9) outhit the Rebels, 8-5, but stranded seven base runners and allowed a run on a fielding error in the first inning.

UNLV opened the scoring in the first inning, loading the bases with a single, hit-by-pitch, and a fielder's choice. Kiley Harrison then drew a walk for the Rebels, pushing the first run of the game across the plate. DSU retired the next UNLV batter for the second out of the inning, but allowed a run on a fielding error on the ensuing at-bat to give the Rebels a 2-0 lead.

The Trailblazers answered in the top of the third. Bailey Gaffin (Glendale, Ariz./Mountain Ridge HS) drew a hit-by-pitch, and moved to second on a Kenzie Sawyer (Cedar City, Utah/Canyon View) double to right field. After a popup to second base, Arista Honey (Bothell, Wash./Bothell HS) singled to left field, scoring Gaffin from second to cut the lead to 2-1. DSU had runners on the corners with just one out, but UNLV retired the next two batters to get out of the jam.

The Rebels added an insurance run in the fifth inning, extending the lead to 3-1 with a solo home run to left field.

Dixie State countered with another run in the sixth inning, when Shelby Yung (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) scored Cassidy Morton (Diamond Bar, Calif./Diamond Ranch HS) from third on an infield single to third base to cut the lead to 3-2. But Yung was caught stealing second during the next at-bat to end the inning.

The Trailblazers made quick work of UNLV in the bottom of the sixth, setting up a final chance to tie or take the lead.

Josey Hartman (Mapleton, Utah/Maple Mountain HS) singled to center field with one out in the seventh, then moved to second when Dani Bartholf (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert HS) was hit by a pitch with two outs. Mallory Paulson (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument HS) then lifted the 2-2 pitch to center field, but UNLV center fielder Myranda Bueno made the catch to end the game.

Eight different DSU players recorded a hit in the game, while Honey and Yung each logged an RBI. Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro HS) (12-4) took the loss in the pitcher's circle, allowing three hits and two runs (one earned) with a strikeout in four solid innings pitched. Alexis Barkwell (San Diego, Calif./North Medford HS) entered in the fifth inning, and allowed one run on two hits with two strikeouts.

Dixie State returns to Pacific West Conference play on Saturday, April 8, hosting Notre Dame de Namur in a doubleheader at Karl Brooks Field.
