Beardshear throws no-hitter as No. 24 Softball sweeps Saturday DH vs. NDNU

Brooklyn Beardshear tosses first career no-hitter with seven strikeouts

No. 24 Dixie State softball resumed Pacific West Conference play on Saturday and took both ends, 11-1 and 3-0, of a doubleheader vs. Notre Dame de Namur at Karl Brooks Field.

The Trailblazers (32-9, 17-5 PacWest) pounded on 19 hits on the day, and Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro HS) tossed a five-inning no-hitter with seven strikeouts in game one en route to the doubleheader sweep.

GAME ONE – Dixie State 11, Notre Dame de Namur 1 (5 innings)

Dixie State set the tone defensively in game one, as Beardshear struck out two NDNU batters in the first inning, and forced two groundouts and a popup in the second inning to retire the Argonaut side in order.

The Trailblazers opened the scoring in the bottom of the second, taking advantage of two NDNU errors to take a 3-0 lead. Mallory Paulson (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument HS) and Kenzie Sawyer (Cedar City, Utah/Canyon View) reached on fielding errors in consecutive at-bats and both advanced on a wild pitch. Shelby Yung (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) then placed a full-count pitch into the gap in right-center field to score Paulson and Sawyer. Yung later scored on a Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, Utah/Stansbury HS) RBI-triple to right field to stake DSU to the three-run advantage.

Beardshear continued her dominance in the pitcher's circle in the third inning, striking out the NDNU side to push her strikeout total to five.

Dixie State erupted for five more runs in the bottom of the third, turning three hits and two more NDNU errors into an 8-0 lead. Bailey Gaffin (Glendale, Ariz./Mountain Ridge HS) set the tone with a leadoff double down the left field line. Kaitlyn Delange (Cedar City, Utah/Canyon View HS) entered as a pinch-runner, then scored on a Paulson fielder's choice RBI. Paulson later scored when Arista Honey (Bothell, Wash./Bothell HS) reached on an error, while Josey Hartman (Mapleton, Utah/Maple Mountain HS) and Bassett each drew RBI-walks. Cassidy Morton (Diamond Bar, Calif./Diamond Ranch HS) brought home the final run of the inning, reaching on a fielder's choice to score Riley Tyteca (Farmington, Utah/Viewmont HS) from third.

The Trailblazers put the finishing touches on the win in the fourth inning, adding three more runs on four hits to push the lead to 11-0. Brenna Hinck (Tremonton, Utah/Bear River HS) highlighted the frame for DSU, blasting a two RBI-triple to right center field. Hinck then scored the final run of the inning when Yung reached on an infield single.

NDNU scored on a sacrifice fly to center field in the top of the fifth, but Beardshear struck out the next batter to secure the win and a no-hitter.

Beardshear improved to 13-4 in the pitcher's circle with the no-hitter, allowing one run with seven strikeouts.
The no-hitter marks Beardshear's first career no-hitter, and the first of the season for DSU. Yung led the way at the plate, going 3-for-3 with three RBI, while Bassett and Hinck each logged two RBI.

GAME TWO – Dixie State 3, Notre Dame de Namur 0

Dixie State broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning in game two, taking a 1-0 lead when Paulson doubled to open the inning and scored when Honey grounded out to shortstop for the RBI.

The Trailblazers added two insurance runs in the sixth inning when Hartman drove an RBI-single to center field, and Sawyer scored Hartman with an RBI-double to right center.

Alexis Barkwell (San Diego, Calif./North Medford HS) then went to work in the seventh, striking out the first two batters and forcing a popup to second base to clinch the win.

Hartman led the charge offensively, going 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Bassett finished at 2-for-4. Barkwell (8-1) earned the win in the pitcher's circle, striking out five in her second complete-game shutout of the season.

Dixie State next travels to Irvine, California, for a pivotal PacWest series at Concordia-Irvine on Friday and Saturday.
