Women’s Tennis heads to NorCal for seven matches

After two consecutive matches at home, the Dixie State women's tennis team heads to northern California for a stretch of seven matches in as many days.

The Trailblazers (6-3) will open the trip with three matches in Oakland, beginning with a neutral-site match vs. Hawai'i Hilo on Saturday. DSU will battle Holy Names on Sunday before wrapping up its time in Oakland with a Monday afternoon matchup vs. Mills College. Dixie State will then head to Dominican on Tuesday, Notre Dame de Namur on Wednesday, and Stanislaus State on Thursday, before closing the trip at Sonoma State next Friday.

KNOW YOUR FOE: Hawai'i Hilo enters the weekend with a 3-9 record, with all three wins coming over Chaminade. Daniela Sanz Caseli leads the Vulcans in singles play with a 6-6 record at No. 1 singles, while Caseli and Sara Velero own a team-best 4-8 mark at No. 1 doubles.

Holy Names owns a 4-8 record, having defeated Biola, Hawai'i Hilo, Chaminade, and Mills College. Julia Golubs has logged a team-best 5-7 record in singles play, while two different duos (Jahan Bayramova/Dominique Ernst; Taylor Barajas/Marlayna Durant) each hold a 3-1 mark in doubles play.

Mills College holds an 0-11 record. The Cyclones dropped their most recent matches to Hawai'i Pacific and the College of Idaho.

Dominican enters the weekend with a 5-5 record. The Penguins earned a 9-0 win over American River in its most recent match. Dominican will host Hawai'i Hilo on Sunday before the matchup with Dixie State on Sunday.

Stanislaus State enters the weekend with a 2-4 record. Like Dominican, the Warriors also defeated American River in their most recent match. Stanislaus State will travel to Cal Poly on
Sunday and host Hawai'i Hilo on Tuesday before Thursday's match vs. DSU. Cassidy Ferrell leads the Warriors with an 8-4 record in singles play, while Ferrell and Jaella Conway own a team-best 6-5 mark in doubles play.

Sonoma State enters the weekend with a 7-6 record, defeating Concordia-Irvine in its most recent match. The Seawolves will host Holy Names on Saturday before next Friday's match vs. Dixie State. Jensyn Warren leads the Seawolves with a 20-4 mark in singles play, while Jenna DeTurk and Amanda Zuidema hold a team-best 10-2 record in doubles play.

LAST TIME OUT: Dixie State dropped an 8-1 decision to Boise State on Wednesday. Lacey Hancock (St. George, Utah/Pine View HS) and Laura Hartle (Salt Lake City, Utah/East HS) battled for an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles for DSU's lone point of the match.

MOVING INTO THE RANKINGS: Sophomore Lacey Hancock (St. George, Utah/Pine View HS) landed at No. 14 in the latest Oracle/ITA Division II West Region rankings, marking the highest spring-season ranking in program history for a DSU player.

PERFECT IN THE FALL: The Trailblazers opened the 2016-17 season with four wins in Colorado in October, marking the program's best start in dual match play in the NCAA Division II era. Two DSU players recorded perfect starts in singles play, led by sophomore Lacey Hancock (St. George, Utah/Pine View HS), who played to a 3-0 record at No. 1 singles and 1-0 at No. 3 singles. Freshman Kyra Harames (Spokane, Wash./Central Valley HS) played to 3-0 at No. 5 singles and 1-0 at No. 4 singles.

Senior Laura Hartle (Salt Lake City, Utah/East HS) and freshman Maria Kana Goldsmith (Honolulu, Hawaii/Myron B. Thompson Academy) swept through their doubles matches in the fall, rolling to a 4-0 record at No. 3 doubles.

2016-17 ROSTER: Dixie State returns two players, Hancock and Hartle, from the 2015-16 squad and looks to build on its 5-13 record from last season.

Hancock recorded a 9-8 overall record in singles play in the 2015-16 season, finishing the year at 2-0 at No. 1 singles and 7-8 at No. 2 singles. Hancock posted an 8-10 mark in doubles play. Hartle returns as the only senior on the roster after logging a 5-10 record at No. 3 singles and a 4-14 mark in overall doubles play last season.

Five new players join the ranks for the 2016-17 season, including junior Kaylee Milligan (Silver City, N.M./Silver HS), and freshmen Frances Hina Goldsmith (Honolulu, Hawaii/Myron B. Thompson Academy), Maria Kana Goldsmith (Honolulu, Hawaii/Myron B. Thompson Academy), Kyra Harames (Spokane, Wash./Central Valley HS), and Sydney Nichols (Elwood, Utah/Bear River HS).

Milligan joins the team after competing as a multi-sport athlete at Silver High School in Silver City, New Mexico. Twin sisters Hina and Kana Goldsmith come to Dixie State after playing in Hawaii and Japan during high school. Harames prepped at Central Valley High School in Spokane, Washington, and Nichols joins the team after playing at Bear River High School in Garland, Utah.

NEXT UP: Dixie State will prepare for the Pacific West Conference Championships, beginning Wednesday, April 19, in Surprise, Arizona.
