No. 22 Baseball Drops Series Finale to Concordia-Irvine Sunday

No. 22 Dixie State saw its five-game winning streak come to a halt Sunday as the Trailblazers dropped an 11-5 decision to Concordia-Irvine in the final game of a four-game Pacific West Conference weekend series at Bruce Hurst Field. The Trailblazers (17-5/6-2 PacWest) did take three of four from the Eagles overall to close their season-long 18-game homestand at 13-5.

DSU jumped out to a quick 2-0 first inning lead thanks to lead-off hits from Tyler Baker (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman HS) and Tyler Mildenberg (Huntington Beach, Calif./Marina HS), who both would come around to score on a Logan Porter (Surprise, Ariz./Valley Vista HS) two-run single to centerfield. However that lead would disappear over the next four innings as the Trailblazers, who were ranked 23rd-nationally in fielding percentage, committed five errors over the first five innings of play, four of which led to five unearned runs as the Eagles used a pair of big innings to vault to a 9-2 lead midway through the fifth frame.

CUI (6-13/3-7 PacWest) plated an unearned run in the second before erupting for five runs in the fourth, aided by two costly DSU miscues. The Eagles then tacked on three more runs in the fifth, two of which were unearned, which gave CUI the seven-run cushion.

Dixie State came back with three runs in the home half of the fifth on a Mildenberg sacrifice fly and a Porter RBI-hit, while the Eagles gifted DSU another run on an error of their own to make it a 9-5 ballgame.

However that would be as close as the Trailblazers would get as Eagle reliever Carpenter Pagget (W, 1-0), who came on to get the final out of the fifth, limited DSU to just three hits over the final four-plus innings to close out the game.

Baker led DSU with three hits and two runs scored, while Porter collected two safeties and drove in three runs, which upped his RBI total to 12 for the series and a team-leading 42 on the year. Sophomore starter Preston Hannay (Murray, Utah/Murray HS) (L, 2-1) surrendered six hits and six runs, though only three were earned, in four innings of work.

After five-straight weeks at home, Dixie State heads out on the road for a crucial four-game series at PacWest rival California Baptist this Thursday-through-Saturday, March 16-18, in Riverside.
