No. 20 Softball splits Saturday DH with No. 9 Adelphi

Trailblazers take 2-of-3 in the series

The No. 20 Dixie State softball team split its doubleheader with No. 9 Adelphi on Saturday at Karl Brooks Field, and took two of out three games overall in the series with the Panthers.

The Trailblazers (14-3) earned their second consecutive shutout victory over Adelphi in game one with a 6-0 win, but fell 9-6 in game two. DSU pounded out 19 hits on the day, but stranded a combined 15 runners on base.

GAME ONE – Dixie State 6, Adelphi 0

Adelphi looked to score first, using back-to-back singles to put two runners on base with no outs. But Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro HS) forced the next batter into a popup. Beardshear made a diving catch near the third-base line for one out, then fired to second base to complete the double play after the runner failed to tag up. Beardshear then forced a groundout to first base to end the inning.

Dixie State broke the scoreless tie in the second inning when Jessica Gonzalez (Kingsburg, Calif./Kingsburg HS) scored from third on a double steal play to take a 1-0 lead. The Trailblazers added two runs in the third inning, scoring first on a Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, Utah/Stansbury HS) sacrifice fly. Josey Hartman (Mapleton, Utah/Maple Mountain HS) later scored from third on a Shelby Yung (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) infield single to push the lead to 3-0.

DSU tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning behind RBI singles from Bailey Gaffin (Glendale, Ariz./Mountain Ridge HS) and Dani Bartholf (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert HS). The Trailblazers closed the scoring in the fifth inning when Hartman scored from third on DSU's second double-steal scoring play of the game. The run pushed the lead to the final tally of 6-0.

Beardshear tossed her second consecutive shutout victory of the season, allowing six hits and striking out four batters. Yung led the way at the plate, going 2-for-3, while Gaffin and Bartholf each finished at 1-for-2 with an RBI.

GAME TWO – Adelphi 9, Dixie State 6

Adelphi mirrored DSU's game one start in the second game, scoring one run in the second and two runs in the third (all from home runs) to take a 3-0 lead.

Dixie State used a Gaffin RBI triple, followed by a two-run home run by Bartholf to tie the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth.

The Panthers regained the lead in the sixth inning, using three runs on two hits to gain the 6-3 advantage.

The Trailblazers loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth with no outs and seemed poised to tie or take the lead. But the next three DSU batters were retired in order, stranding the base runners.

Adelphi then put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh with a two-run home run and an RBI single for a 9-3 lead.

Dixie State looked to rally in the bottom half of the seventh, when Gaffin drove an RBI double to left center and Kenzie Sawyer (Cedar City, Utah/Canyon View) blasted a two-run home run to left to cut the lead to 9-6 with no outs. But the rally stalled, as three of the next for DSU batters were retired to seal the Adelphi win.

Gaffin led the charge offensively for DSU, going 2-for-2 with 2 RBI, while Sawyer went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI, and Bartholf finished with 2 RBI after her home run.

Dixie State opens Pacific West Conference play next week with a four-game series vs. Holy Names. The series will feature a doubleheader on Saturday and Sunday at Karl Brooks Field.
