Defense shines as No. 12 Softball sweeps Saturday DH over Holy Names

Beardshear throws four perfect innings before being replaced heading to the fifth inning, DSU sets new single-game stolen bases record

No. 12 Dixie State opened Pacific West Conference play with a doubleheader sweep over Holy Names on Saturday at Karl Brooks Field.

The Trailblazers (16-3, 2-0 PacWest) ended both games in five innings, taking game one by a 9-1 count, and earning a 9-0 victory in game two. DSU dominated defensively, allowing just four hits and striking out 11 batters on the day. Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro HS) set the tone defensively, tossing four perfect innings with six strikeouts before being replaced heading into the fifth inning in game one. Madi Dove (Cypress, Calif./Cypress HS) continued the dominance in the pitcher's circle in game two, throwing a three-hit gem with four strikeouts to earn her first career complete-game shutout victory.

GAME ONE – Dixie State 9, Holy Names 1 (5 innings)

Dixie State methodically built a lead in game one, scoring one run in the first, second, and third inning to stake itself to a 3-0 advantage.

The Trailblazers blew the game open in the fourth inning, turning five hits into six runs to push the lead to 9-0. Bailey Gaffin (Glendale, Ariz./Mountain Ridge HS) and Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, Utah/Stansbury HS) each recorded triples in the inning to account for three of the runs.

Holy Names broke the DSU shutout bid in the top of the fifth, scoring when Valentina Fontes reached first base on a fielder's choice to cut the lead to the eventual final score of 9-1.

Beardshear earned the win in the pitcher's circle, throwing four perfect innings with six strikeouts before being replaced heading into the fifth inning. Beardshear improves to 8-1 with the win, and continues to lead the PacWest in wins. Bassett set the tone offensively for DSU in game one, going 2-for-3 with a triple and 2 RBI, while Dani Bartholf (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert HS) went 2-for-2 with an RBI.

GAME TWO – Dixie State 9, Holy Names 0 (5 innings)

Dixie State broke game two open in the bottom of the second, turning two hits and two HNU errors into a 4-0 lead. Riley Tyteca (Farmington, Utah/Viewmont HS) singled to center field to spark the rally, then scored from third on a double-steal play. Josey Hartman (Mapleton, Utah/Maple Mountain HS) also singled to center field in the inning, scoring Bartholf from third. Gaffin plated the final two runs of the inning on a sacrifice fly deep to center field, scoring Hartman from third. Bassett also scored on the play after tagging at second, racing around third, and sliding across the plate.

The Trailblazers added two runs to the lead in the third, scoring on a Taylor Godfrey (Buckeye, Ariz./Estrella Foothills HS) groundout to first base and a Hartman sacrifice fly to center field to pad the advantage to 6-0.

DSU would get the runs it needed to end the game in five innings in the fourth, turning three hits and one HNU error into a 9-0 lead. Jessica Gonzalez (Kingsburg, Calif./Kingsburg HS), Tyteca, and Cassidy Morton (Diamond Bar, Calif./Diamond Ranch HS) each recorded an RBI in the inning.

Holy Names threatened to score in the fifth, putting a runner on second with only one out. But Kaitlyn Delange (Cedar City, Utah/Canyon View HS) had other plans. Delange snared a hard line drive deep in the infield at second base, then made a diving catch in the infield on consecutive plays to clinch the DSU victory.

Dove earned the win in the pitcher's circle, tossing a three-hit gem with four strikeouts in her first career complete-game shutout victory. Tyteca led the way at the plate in game two, going 2-for-2 with an RBI and two stolen bases. Dixie State also set a new single-game record with nine stolen bases in the game, eclipsing the previous mark of eight accomplished by three different DSU squads (most recently at Dominican in 2016). The nine stolen bases also marks the second-most stolen bases in an NCAA Division II softball game this season.

The Trailblazers close the weekend with another doubleheader vs. Holy Names starting at Noon on Sunday at Karl Brooks Field.
