Hilty Dominates as No. 15 Baseball Completes Sweep of MSUB Sunday

Hilty strikes out a career-high nine in a one-hit complete game shutout gem

Mason Hilty (Richland, Wash./Richland HS) fired a complete game one-hit shutout and struck out a career-high nine to help lead No. 15 Dixie State to a 5-0 victory over Montana State Billings Sunday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field. DSU swept all three games from the Yellowjackets and pushed its winning streak to six games in improving to 11-3 on the season.

Hilty (W, 3-1) carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning and had faced one batter over the minimum through six innings after surrendering a third-inning walk. The senior righthander retired the first two Yellowjackets he faced in that seventh inning, but lost the no-hit bid one batter later when Conner Linebarger singled up the middle for MSUB's lone safety for the game.

In all, MSUB had three total baserunners reach, the last coming on a one-out throwing error in the ninth, which was the lone runner to reach second base on the day.

Meanwhile, the DSU offense was held in check through the first three innings by MSUB starter Matt Hape (L, 0-3), who held the Trailblazers without a hit over that stretch. Dixie State finally broke through in the fourth, thanks to two a pair of Yellowjacket errors and a two-out RBI single from Tyler Baker (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman HS) that gave DSU a 2-0 lead.

Trey Kamachi (Kapolei, Hawai'i/Kapolei HS) reached on a lead-off walk to open the fourth, then the MSUB defense mishandled consecutive sacrifice bunt attempts, which loaded the bases with no outs. DSU would score the game's first run one batter later on a Reece Lucero (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva HS) run-scoring groundout, and MSUB looked as if it would get out of further damage when Logan Porter (Surprise, Ariz./Valley Vista HS) was thrown out at home on a failed suicide squeeze bunt attempt by Baker for the second out. However Baker ran the count full and collected the first hit by either team with a bounding ball up the middle to stake the Trailblazers to a two-run advantage.

Dixie State then broke the game open with three runs in the sixth thanks to run-scoring hits from Porter, Baker and Bryce Feist (Emmett, Idaho/Rocky Mountain HS), the last of which chased Hape from the game. Baker led DSU with two hits and two RBI as the Trailblazers finished with six safeties overall, while Kamachi extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a single to lead-off the sixth inning.

After going nearly three years without a nine-inning complete game shutout, DSU had two pitchers hurl masterpieces in less than 48 hours. Hilty's gem came on the heels of a three-hit, 11-strikeout performance by junior Dylan File (St. George, Utah/Desert Hills HS) in the series opener vs. MSUB last Friday night. Prior to this weekend, the last time a DSU pitcher threw a complete-game shutout was former Dixie State pitcher Jon Conquy in a 7-0 home win Cal State Los Angeles 7-0 (4/18/14).

Dixie State opens Pacific West Conference play next weekend as the Trailblazers host Holy Names for a four-game series at Bruce Hurst Field. The series will be played in a pair of doubleheaders, the first coming Saturday, March 4 at 2 p.m., followed by a second twin bill Sunday, March 5 at 12 noon.
