No. 20 Softball handles No. 9 Adelphi in five innings

No. 20 Dixie State opened its three-game series with No. 9 Adelphi on Friday with a 10-0 win over the Panthers in five innings at Karl Brooks Field.

Dixie State turned 10 hits and three Adelphi errors into the 10-0 triumph, recording its second shutout victory of the season in the process.

After a scoreless first inning, the Trailblazers (13-2) opened the scoring in the bottom of the second when Kenzie Sawyer (Cedar City, Utah/Canyon View) doubled to left center, scoring Bailey Gaffin (Glendale, Ariz./Mountain Ridge HS) from first. Sawyer later scored on an RBI bunt single by Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, Utah/Stansbury HS). Dani Bartholf (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert HS) gave the Trailblazers a 3-0 lead when she scored from third when Shelby Yung (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) reached first on a fielder's choice.

Dixie State added two more runs in the third inning, scoring the first on an Arista Honey (Bothell, Wash./Bothell HS) RBI triple to right field. Riley Tyteca (Farmington, Utah/Viewmont HS) stole home on a double steal play later in the inning to push the DSU advantage to 5-0.

The Trailblazers sealed the game in the fourth inning, turning three hits and two Adelphi errors into five runs. Bassett scored the first run of the frame on a throwing error from left field, followed by an RBI walk by Tyteca. Gaffin brought two more runs in during the ensuing at-bat, driving a sharp single off the pitcher's glove and into right field. Tyteca later scored on a fielding error to push the lead to eventual final score of 10-0.

Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro HS) earned the win in the pitcher's circle, tossing her sixth complete game of the season to improve to 6-1. Beardshear allowed just five hits and struck out four batters en route to her second shutout victory of the season.

Gaffin led the way at the plate, going 2-for-2 with 2 RBI and a walk, while Mallory Paulson (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument HS) also logged a 2-for-2 performance. Bassett and Yung each went 1-for-2 with a walk and a RBI, while Sawyer went 1-for-3 with an RBI double. Dixie State went without a home run for just the third time this season.

Dixie State and Adelphi will wrap up the three-game series with a doubleheader starting at Noon on Saturday at Karl Brooks Field.
