No. 23 Trailblazer Softball sweeps Day 2 at Cactus Classic

DSU earns first win over WTAMU, Brooklyn Beardshear sets career-high in strikeouts

The No. 23 Dixie State softball team swept its two games at the Cactus Classic in Tucson, Arizona, on Saturday, defeating University of Mary, 9-5, and earning its first victory over No. 2 West Texas A&M with an 8-4 win over the Buffs.

The Trailblazers (11-2) pounded out 24 hits, four home runs, and a combined 17 RBI on Saturday, as the team continued its early season tear.

GAME ONE – Dixie State 9, University of Mary 5

Dixie State raced to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, turning six hits into the four-run advantage. Jessica Gonzalez (Kingsburg, Calif./Kingsburg HS) connected on her eighth home run of the season to score the first two runs, followed by RBI singles by Dani Bartholf (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert HS) and Kenzie Sawyer (Cedar City, Utah/Canyon View).

The Trailblazers added to the lead in the third inning when Mallory Paulson (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument HS) and Bailey Gaffin (Glendale, Ariz./Mountain Ridge HS) opened the inning with back-to-back solo home runs to push the lead to 6-0.

The Marauders countered in the top of the fourth, turning four hits and a DSU error into five runs to pull to within 6-5. But they would get no closer.

Dixie State iced the game in the fifth inning, scoring three runs on four hits to push the lead to the final count of 9-5.

Sawyer led the offensive attack for DSU, going 3-for-3 with 2 RBI, while Paulson turned in a 3-for-4 performance with an RBI. Alexandria Melendez (Moreno Valley, Calif./Valley View HS) earned the win in the pitcher's circle, allowing two runs in four innings of work.

GAME TWO – Dixie State 8, West Texas A&M 4

No. 2 West Texas A&M took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, using a 2 RBI triple to build the two-run advantage.

Dixie State countered with two runs, a Dani Bartholf (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert HS) RBI single in the second inning and an Arista Honey (Bothell, Wash./Bothell HS) sacrifice fly in the third, to tie the game at 2-2.

The Buffs regained the lead in the fourth with an RBI single to right field, but the lead didn't last long.

Sawyer blasted a solo home run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 3-3, and after WTAMU scored again in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead, the Trailblazers took the lead for good in the bottom half of the fifth inning. After loading the bases, Sawyer earned a hit-by-pitch RBI, followed by an RBI single by Bartholf to take a 5-4 lead.

Dixie State clinched the game in the bottom of the sixth, turning three hits into three runs to bring the score to the final tally of 8-4 and earn the program's first victory over the Buffs.

Gaffin led the charge at the plate, going 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and a walk, while Bartholf added two hits and 2 RBI.  Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro HS) earned the win in the pitcher's circle, tossing a complete-game gem with a career-high 10 strikeouts.

The Trailblazers close the 2017 Cactus Classic with a grudge match vs. WTAMU on Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
