No. 23 Softball rallies to defeat No. 2 West Texas A&M

Brenna Hinck logs career day as DSU records second consecutive win over WTAMU

The No. 23 Dixie State softball team rallied to defeat No. 2 West Texas A&M on Sunday in the final day of the Cactus Classic in Tucson, Arizona.

Just one day after earning the program's first win over WTAMU, the Trailblazers (12-2) overcame a 5-2 deficit to earn its second consecutive victory over the No. 2-ranked team in Division II.

Dixie State opened a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Shelby Yung (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) scored from third on an RBI single to center field by Arista Honey (Bothell, Wash./Bothell HS).

West Texas A&M tied the game in the bottom half the inning, duplicating DSU's effort to score with an RBI single.

The Trailblazers regained the lead at 2-1 in the second when Brenna Hinck (Tremonton, Utah/Bear River HS) singled up the middle to score Dani Bartholf (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert HS) from second base.

The Buffs responded with back-to-back home runs in the bottom half of the second for a total of four runs to take a 5-2 lead. But the lead was short lived.

Unfazed, Dixie State countered with three runs of its own in the top of the third. Bailey Gaffin (Glendale, Ariz./Mountain Ridge HS) started the rally, reaching first after being hit by a pitch and moved to third after a double by Bartholf. Hinck cleared the bases with a 2 RBI double down the left field line to pull DSU to within 5-4. Yung then scored Hinck from second with a single to right field to tie the game at 5-5.

The Trailblazers took the lead in the fifth inning when Mallory Paulson (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument HS) took a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch to bring Hinck home from third. DSU added an insurance run in the sixth, scoring when Hinch reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Riley Tyteca (Farmington, Utah/Viewmont HS) to score from third.

The Buffs threated to send the game to extra innings in the bottom of the seventh, using a single and double to put runners on second and third with no outs. But Alexandria Melendez (Moreno Valley, Calif./Valley View HS) got the Trailblazers out the jam, forcing back-to-back groundouts to shortstop. WTAMU scored on the second groundout to cut the lead to 7-6, but the next batter flied out to right field to end the game.

Hinck led DSU with a career-day at the plate, going 2-for-3 with 4 RBI and walk, while Bartholf and Yung each finished the day at 3-for-4. Melendez earned the win in the pitcher's circle after entering the game in the second inning. Melendez struck out three and allowed two runs in six innings of work.

Dixie State returns to Karl Brooks Field to host No. 7 Adelphi, with one game on Friday and a doubleheader on Saturday.
