Softball splits on Cactus Classic Day 1

The No. 23 Dixie State softball team split on the first day of the Cactus Classic on Friday in Tucson, Arizona. The Trailblazers (9-2) opened the day with a 2-1 loss to Lubbock Christian, then rallied for an 18-16 win over Fort Lewis later in the day.

GAME ONE – Lubbock Christian 2, Dixie State 1

Lubbock Christian opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, turning back-to-back doubles into a 1-0 lead.

Dixie State answered in the top of the fourth, tying the game at 1-1. Jessica Gonzalez (Kingsburg, Calif./Kingsburg HS) doubled down the left field line to open the inning and later scored when Bailey Gaffin (Glendale, Ariz./Mountain Ridge HS) singled through the left side.

The Chaparrals regained the lead in the fifth inning, turning three hits and a DSU error into a 2-1 advantage.

The Trailblazers looked to tie or take the lead in the top of the sixth with runners on first and third with only one out. But, the rally was stopped almost as quickly as it began, as Riley Tyteca (Farmington, Utah/Viewmont HS) was thrown out at home and a foul-out to left field on the next at-bat ended the inning.

DSU had a final opportunity in the top of the seventh when Josey Hartman (Mapleton, Utah/Maple Mountain HS) tripled with two outs, but was stranded after a flyout to left field ended the game.

Gaffin led the way at the plate, going 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI. Despite taking her first loss of the year, Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro HS) posted a solid outing with four strikeouts and two runs allowed.

GAME TWO – Dixie State 18, Fort Lewis 16

Dixie State erased a 9-2 deficit en route to an 18-16 victory over Fort Lewis. The Trailblazers scored nine runs in the fifth inning and added five more in the sixth, while logging 17 total hits in the win.

Four players recorded multiple RBI in the game led by Gonzalez, who went 3-for-5 with two home runs and 4 RBI. Hartman and Shelby Yung (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) each recorded 3 RBI, while Kenzie Sawyer (Cedar City, Utah/Canyon View) went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI. Four different pitchers saw action for DSU, with Madi Dove (Cypress, Calif./Cypress HS) picking up the win. Dove struck out two and allowed three hits in 2.1 innings of work.
