Dixie State completed a four-game Pacific West Conference series sweep by claiming both games of a Tuesday doubleheader at Academy of Art at nearby Laney College in Oakland, Calif. DSU (17-5/5-3 PacWest) pounded out 14 hits en route to a 13-2 win in the opener, and completed the sweep with an 8-5 triumph in the finale.
Senior first baseman
Samuel Hall (Ogden, Utah/Bonneville HS) staked DSU to a 3-0 through the first four innings of game one, driving home a run on a single in the first frame before connecting for his second home run of the season, a two-run shot to right center field in the fourth.
The Storm padded their lead in the sixth thanks to an RBI-single from freshman 3B
Bryce Feist (Emmett, Idaho/Rocky Mountain HS) before erupting for three runs in seventh, highlighted by a two-run triple from junior 2B
Drew McLaughlin (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain HS), who came home one batter later on an RBI-groundout by junior outfielder
Trey Kamachi (Kapolei, Hawai'i/Kapolei HS).
The run support was more than enough for freshman righthander
Preston Hannay (Murray, Utah/Murray HS) (W, 3-0), who tossed six shutout innings and scattered six hits with three strikeouts in his first collegiate start.
After the Urban Knights (7-14/2-5 PacWest) broke through with an unearned run in the seventh, Dixie State put the game away with a four-run eighth inning. The Storm pounded out four hits in the rally, including a two-run single from Kamachi and an RBI-double from junior DH
Ryan Rodriguez (Folsom, Calif./Vista Del Lago HS).
Every Storm starter had at least one base hit as DSU outhit the Urban Knights 14-10. Hall and Kamachi led the way with two hits and three RBI apiece, while Feist, Rodriguez and junior OF
Miles Bice (Henderson, Nev./Coronado HS) each collected two safeties.
In the finale, Dixie State picked up right where it left off in game one as the Storm tallied six runs in the second inning to lead 6-0. DSU scored the first two runs without benefit of a hit as sophomore DH
Cam Gust (Riverton, Utah/Riverton HS) drew a lead-off walk and
Trey Reineke (Aurora, Colo./Smoky Hill HS) reached on an AAU infield error. Feist sacrificed the base runners over and sophomore catcher
Jake Davison (Taylorsville, Utah/Taylorsville HS) laid down a squeeze bunt to plate Gust with game's first run. Reineke then stole home a couple pitches later to push DSU's lead to 2-0.
Bice was then hit by the next pitch and that opened the floodgates as DSU answered the beaning with four-straight base hits, including three doubles, to rally for four more runs. Bice scored on a
Tanner Morache (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada/Surrey HS) double, who then came home on a McLaughlin single two pitches later. Kamachi and Hall then connected for back-to-back RBI-doubles as DSU wound up sending nine men to the plate in the frame.
Dixie State tacked on another run in the third on a Davison RBI-single, but the Urban Knights came back with four runs in the fourth stanza, three of which were unearned after a Storm error, to cut the deficit to 7-4.
The Storm pushed across a run in the sixth, and that run was needed as AAU pulled to within three again in the home half of the frame, but senior RHP
Spencer Greer (Woodinville, Wash./Woodinville HS) got out of the inning to escape further damage. Senior southpaw
Kolton Brost (Mona, Utah/Payson HS) (S, 1) then came on and tossed a scoreless seventh inning to close out the game and the series.
DSU outhit AAU 11-6 in the finale, with the 1-3 batters in the Storm lineup going 7-for-12 with four RBI and four runs scored. McLaughlin led the way with three hits, while Morache and Kamachi collected two hits apiece. Junior reliever
Jose Rosales-Rodarte (Las Vegas, Nev./Spring Valley HS) (W, 1-0) was awarded the victory as six Storm pitchers saw action in the game.
Dixie State continues its eight-game Bay Area road trip this Thursday as the Storm open a four-game set at Holy Names at 2 p.m. (PT), in Alameda. DSU will also play a doubleheader Friday at 11 a.m. (PT), and will close the series Saturday at 11 a.m. (PT). Â
