Softball wins Sunday twinbill, completes four-game sweep of HPU

The No. 19 Dixie State softball team won both games of a Sunday afternoon doubleheader over Hawai'i Pacific on Sunday at Karl Brooks Field, completing the four-game weekend sweep of the Sharks in the process.

The Red Storm (17-7, 5-3 PacWest) needed an extra inning to earn a 4-3 win in Game One, winning on a Jessica Gonzalez (Kingsburg, Calif./Kingsburg HS) walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the eight, her second walk-off of the weekend. DSU rolled to an 8-0, six-inning victory in Game Two.

GAME ONE

After Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, Calif./Highland HS) recorded two strikeouts in the top of the first inning, Dixie State scored first in the bottom half of the inning. Gonzalez recorded her first RBI of the day on a single to right center field, scoring Autumn Woodfall (Kaysville, Utah/Davis HS).

The Storm added to the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when Shelby Yung (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) singled to left center field, scoring Dani Bartholf (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert HS) from third and Mallory Paulson (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument HS) from second, giving DSU a 3-0 lead.

Dixie State looked to end the game in seven innings, but Hawai'i Pacific had other plans. The Sharks scored a run in the top of the seventh inning to close the gap to 3-1. Then, with two outs and runners on first and second, Kiana Wolfe stepped to the plate for HPU. Wolfe took the first pitch, a ball, as a right-handed hitter, then switched to the left side and drove the next pitch to left center field for a two-RBI double to tie the score at 3-3.

DSU went down in order in bottom of the seventh, and the Sharks picked up where they left off in the top of the eighth with back-to-back singles. With runners on first and second, a sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third. With two runners in scoring position, HPU seemed poised to take the lead. But the Storm defense wouldn't allow it. Josey Hartman (Mapleton, Utah/Maple Mountain HS) took a grounder at shortstop and tossed the ball to Bailey Gaffin (Glendale, Ariz./Mountain Ridge HS) at second. Gaffin applied the tag to the base runner before she could return to the base, then fired a strike to home where Gonzalez made the tag at the plate to complete the double play and end the inning.

"We talk all the time about finding other ways to get outs," head coach Randy Simkins said. "We always tell the players if the runner is going to be safe at first, look for other outs. There's always another play to be made. We always work on it at practice. Today, practice paid off.  Give credit to Josey and Bailey. They made a great play."

With momentum back on its side, Dixie State made certain it wouldn't let the chance to seal the win slip away. Shelby Yung (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) singled through the right side to start the inning, setting up Gonzalez for another game-winning opportunity. Gonzalez stepped to the plate with two outs and Yung on first and blasted a walk-off RBI double to left center field, her second walk-off in as many days, for the win.

Gonzalez led the way at the plate for DSU in Game One, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a walk. Feickert started for the Storm in the pitcher's circle, striking out eight in 6.2 innings of work, but Alexis Barkwell (San Diego, Calif./North Medford HS) earned the win to improve to 2-1 on the season. Barkwell entered in the sixth inning, striking out one and allowing two hits.

GAME TWO

Dixie State again built an early lead in Game Two, scoring three runs in the bottom of the second inning. Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro HS) opened the inning with a double to left field, then advanced to third when Bartholf flied out to right field. Paulson scored Beardshear on a sacrifice fly to center field on the next play. Taylor Godfrey (Buckeye, Ariz./Estrella Foothills HS), pinch-running for Arista Honey (Bothell, Wash./Bothell HS) after Honey singled, scored later in the inning when Hartman doubled to left field. Hartman scored on the next play when Kristie Johnson (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral HS) doubled to left center field.

The Storm added two runs in both the third and the fourth innings, when Paulson recorded a two-RBI double in the third inning. Yung followed up with an RBI-single in the fourth inning, moving Bassett to third, who stole home on the next play.

DSU ended the game in the sixth inning when Yung again singled, scoring Johnson from third for the winning run.

Yung led the way in Game Two, going 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Hartman went 2-for-2 two with an RBI, and Beardshear went 2-for-3. Beardshear earned the win in the pitcher's circle, allowing three hits in six innings and improving to 4-2 on the season.

Dixie State now hits the road for eight games in five days, playing doubleheaders at Notre Dame de Namur, Dominican, and Chico State next week.
