Softball sweeps Wednesday doubleheader at NDNU

The No. 19 Dixie State softball team took both games of a Wednesday afternoon doubleheader at Notre Dame de Namur in Belmont, California.

The Red Storm (19-7, 7-3 PacWest) rode stellar pitching and solid defense to the victories, as Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, Calif./Highland HS) and Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro HS) combined for 12 strikeouts and 14 shutout innings en route to a 1-0 win in Game One and a 6-0 win in Game Two.

"Anytime you throw two shutouts it's not just your pitchers," head coach Randy Simkins said. "The defense has to play a big role and make plays as well and today they did. Everybody played really well defensively."

GAME ONE

Dixie State scored the only run it would need in the top of the first inning in Game One. Jessica Gonzalez (Kingsburg, Calif./Kingsburg HS) drew a walk with two outs and advanced to third after Autumn Woodfall (Kaysville, Utah/Davis HS) singled and Beardshear reached first on an error. Dani Bartholf (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert HS) singled on the next play, scoring Gonzalez from third to give DSU a 1-0 lead in what proved to be the game-winning RBI.

Feickert and the DSU defense went to work and didn't allow a base runner to advance past second base for the duration of the game.

NDNU looked to start a rally in the bottom of the second inning, when the leadoff batter reached first after getting hit by a pitch. With a runner on first and nobody out, Woodfall delivered a perfect strike from home plate to second base, throwing out the NDNU pinch runner making an attempt to steal. The play swung the momentum, and Feickert struck out the next batter to end the inning.

Dixie State left eight runners on base in Game One, but the defense wouldn't budge. The Storm retired the Argos in order in four out of the final five innings to seal the victory.

Bartholf led the way at the plate in Game One, going 2-for-3 with the only RBI of the game. Feickert tossed a gem in the pitcher's circle, striking out eight while giving up just two hits in the complete-game victory.

GAME TWO

Like the first game, Dixie State struck first in the top of the first inning after Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, Utah/Stansbury HS) singled and later scored on an error by the NDNU catcher. And this time, the Storm would add to the lead.

DSU scored in the top of the second inning when Mallory Paulson (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument HS) singled and later scored from third base when Bartholf reached on a fielder's choice and Bassett was thrown out at second.

The Red Storm sealed the deal in the seventh when Jessica Gonzalez (Kingsburg, Calif./Kingsburg HS) hit a two-run home run, her fourth home run of the season. Paulson continued the rally with a single and scored from first when Kristie Johnson (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral HS) doubled. Johnson later scored the final run of the game when Bassett singled, giving the Storm the 6-0 win.

Bassett led the way at the plate in Game Two, going 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Gonzalez finished the game at 2-for-2 with two RBI. Paulson also finished the game at 2-for-2.  Beardshear earned the win in the pitcher's circle, striking out four and allowing five hits in seven innings.

Dixie State and NDNU will play a second doubleheader on Thursday, this time at the College of San Mateo in nearby San Mateo, California.
