No. 2 Storm Softball rallies to complete Sunday sweep

Beardshear wins game two with walk-off grand slam

The Dixie State softball team swept its games in thrilling fashion Sunday, defeating Colorado State-Pueblo, 9-1, in five innings and rallying for an 8-4 win over Fort Lewis in the final day of the Dixie State Tournament at Karl Brooks Field.

Dixie State rolled to the five-inning victory in game one and overcame a 4-0 deficit in game two to win on a Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro HS) walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning.

GAME 1

The Storm (2-2) raced to a 6-0 lead over CSU-Pueblo in the top of the first inning, taking advantage of three CSU-P errors. Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, Utah/Stansbury HS) singled to left field to open the inning, stole second, and came around to score after a throwing error by the catcher. Four batters later, after two walks and a run scored by virtue of an error, Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro HS) came to the plate with two runners on base, and she did not disappoint. Beardshear singled to center to bring home Autumn Woodfall (Kaysville, Utah/Davis HS) and Josey Hartman (Mapleton, Utah/Maple Mountain HS). Beardshear later scored when Dani Bartholf (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert HS) belted a single to right field, and Jessica Gonzalez (Kingsburg, Calif./Kingsburg HS) singled and scored later on an error for the final run of the inning.

DSU picked up where it left off in the second inning and added two runs to extend the lead to 8-0. Woodfall blasted a double to left field and Beardshear drove her home with a double of her own. Beardshear scored when Gonzalez picked up her second single of the game.
CSU-Pueblo answered with its only run of the game in the bottom of the second inning when Nicole Montoya hit a sacrifice fly to left field and Dora Hernandez tagged up and scored from third base.

The Storm picked up its final run of the game in the top of the third inning when Taylor Godfrey (Buckeye, Ariz./Estrella Foothills HS) scored after a fielding error. DSU tightened up the defense and held on for the victory in five innings.

Beardshear and Gonzalez led the way and each finished the game 2 for 3 at the plate. Beardshear recorded three RBI while Gonzalez added another. Dani Bartholf (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert HS) also had a solid outing, going 2 for 2 with an RBI. Beardshear split time with Alexis Barkwell (San Diego, Calif./North Medford HS) in the pitching circle. The two combined for one strikeout and five walks, while the one CSU-Pueblo run was unearned.

GAME 2

Bassett singled and later advanced to third after a stolen base to start things off against Fort Lewis, but the Storm went down in three consecutive batters after her hit.

The Skyhawks duplicated the effort, leaving runners on the corners in the top of the second inning after a single advanced a runner to third. Madi Dove (Cypress, Calif./Cypress HS), starting her first game in the pitcher's circle for DSU, ensured the runners would stay put and struck out the next batter to end the 2-out rally.

But there was no keeping FLC off the scoreboard in the top of the third inning. After DSU quickly recorded the first two outs, Josey Hartman (Mapleton, Utah/Maple Mountain HS) sailed a throw from shortstop, allowing the batter to reach first. Three pitches later, Angelique Elemen made the Storm pay for the error when she drove the 1-1 pitch over the palm trees in left field for a 2-RBI home run.

Fort Lewis added two more runs to take a 4-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning when Dixie State committed two errors, one throwing and one fielding, that allowed the runs to score.

And then the comeback began. Woodfall singled in the fourth inning, bringing Shelby Yung (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) home to get the Storm on the board. The DSU defense stiffened, retiring the first three batters in the fifth and sixth innings. Meanwhile, the Red Storm bats came alive.

Mallory Paulson (Fruita, Colo./Fruita Monument HS) belted the first DSU home run of the season, banging the line drive off the foul pole in left to start the bottom of the fifth. Bassett followed up the blast with a triple and later scored on a wild pitch to close the gap to 4-3.

Dixie State forced another three up, three down in the top of the seventh, setting the state for a dramatic finish. Bassett hit a ground ball to the shortstop, but beat the throw to first. Yung then brought her home with a single to center field to tie the game at 4-4.

With the game tied, the momentum shifted to the DSU dugout. Woodfall and Hartman both reached first after being hit by pitches to load the bases with one out, and Beardshear stepped to the plate with the chance to win the game. And, like the first game, she did not disappoint. Beardshear worked the count to 1-1, found the pitch she wanted, and sent it over the left field wall for a walk-off grand slam to win the game.

Bassett led the way in game two, going 3 for 4 at the plate, while Yung finished the game 2 for 3 with an RBI. Dove finished with three strikeouts , giving up four runs. Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, Calif./Highland HS) replaced Dove in the fourth inning and shut down the Skyhawks, striking out two and retiring the side in three batters in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings.

Dixie State will host Montana State-Billings in three-game series on Tuesday and Wednesday.
