Softball storms past MSUB with big third inning

The No. 2 Dixie State softball team earned a 9-1 five-inning victory over Montana State-Billings on Tuesday thanks to a seven-run third inning.

The Storm (3-2) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Shelby Yung (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) brought Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, Utah/Stansbury HS) home from third base with an RBI single to center field. Josey Hartman (Mapleton, Utah/Maple Mountain HS) later scored from the same base when Brookyln Beardshear attempted to steal second, baiting the MSUB catcher into making the throw to second base. Hartman scored from third before Beardshear was tagged out between first and second.

The Yellowjackets got a run back in top of the third inning when a pair of walks and a sacrifice bunt moved a base runner to third base. With the bases loaded, MSUB designated player Kelsey Devlin rolled a grounder to third base. Beardshear scooped up the grounder and fired to home for the force out at the plate. But a fielding error after the throw allowed the runner at third to cross the plate safely for the only MSUB run of the day.

The Red Storm responded with a big third inning, putting seven more runs on the board to extend the lead to 9-1. Yung doubled to left field, scoring Hartman from first base to start the rally. Autumn Woodfall (Kaysville, Utah/Davis HS) made her way to first after being hit by a pitch, and all runners were safe after Beardshear reached first on a fielder's choice. With the bases loaded, Dani Bartholf (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert HS) blasted a 3-RBI double down the left field line, then later scored when Bassett doubled to right field.

"We finished innings better today," head coach Randy Simkins said. "We were able to push some runs across in different situations, but we did had a few errors we need to clean up. If we can be patient and pay little better attention to detail, I think we'll be just fine."

Yung led the way for Dixie State, finishing 2 for 3 on the day with two RBI. Bartholf added three RBI on a 1 for 2 outing, and Bassett picked up an RBI while also going 1 for 2 at the plate. Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, Calif./Highland HS) picked up her second win of the season in the pitcher's circle, recording three strikeouts in three innings of work before Beardshear stepped in for the final two innings.

The Storm wrap up its three-game series with MSUB tomorrow with a doubleheader at Karl Brooks Field starting at 3 p.m.
