Pitching Leads Storm Baseball to Friday Sweep

File and Hilty dominate as DSU remains perfect to start 2016 campaign

Dixie State remained unbeaten to start the 2016 season as the Storm took both ends of a Friday doubleheader at Bruce Hurst Field. The Storm rode a pair of dominant pitching performances in posting a 2-1 victory over Northwest Nazarene, followed by an 8-1 triumph vs. Montana State Billings in the nightcap.

In the opener against NNU, sophomore righthander Dylan File (St. George, Utah/Desert Hills HS) (W, 1-0) dominated the Crusaders as he tossed seven shutout innings, allowing just one hit with seven strikeouts. Junior second baseman Drew McLaughlin (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain HS) got the Storm (6-0) on the board in the fourth with a solo home run to left field, and senior shortstop Tanner Morache (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada/Surrey HS) extended the lead to 2-0 with a sacrifice fly in the fifth.

NNU mounted a late charge against the DSU bullpen in the eighth as the Crusaders strung together three singles to push across a run to cut the Storm lead in half at 2-1 with one out in the frame. However Dixie State senior closer Jeremy Alderman (Cheney, Wash./Cheney HS) (S, 2) notched a strikeout and junior catcher Reece Lucero (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva HS) threw out a would-be Crusader base stealer to end the threat. Alderman completed the five-out save by holding NNU scoreless after two Crusaders had reached base in the ninth.

DSU outhit Northwest Nazarene 8-5, with McLaughlin, Lucero and junior OF Trey Kamachi (Kapolei, Hawai'i/Kapolei HS) each collecting two hits.

Against MSUB, Dixie State took advantage of the Yellowjackets inability to find the strike zone as the Storm drew a season-high 12 walks, several which led to DSU runs. The Storm plated a run in the third on a Miles Bice (Henderson, Nev./Coronado HS) RBI-groundout before erupting for four runs in the fourth to jump out to a 5-0 lead. Dixie State padded its lead with two more runs in the fifth, but without benefit of a hit, as the Storm sent eight men to the plate in a frame that featured four walks and a hit batter.

The run support was more than enough for junior righthander Mason Hilty (Richland, Wash./Richland HS) (W, 2-0), who scattered three hits and one run over seven solid innings of work with a career-high eight strikeouts. Three Storm relievers then combined for two innings of one-hit relief to close out the game.

Kamachi posted his second two-hit effort on the day as DSU outhit the Yellowjackets 7-4, while Bice and freshman third baseman Bryce Feist (Emmett, Idaho/Rocky Mountain HS) finished with two RBI apiece.

"Our guys pitched their tails off today," DSU Head Coach Chris Pfatenhauer said. "[Dylan] File and [Mason] Hilty were very good at executing the game plan. Defensively we still are not where we need to be, but we will get better. I'm proud of how our guys are competing right now."

Dixie State returns to action Saturday with another match-up against Northwest Nazarene at 12 noon at Bruce Hurst Field. DSU will then wrap up the weekend with the finale vs. MSUB Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
