Softball splits doubleheader with MSUB

The No. 2 Dixie State softball team split a Wednesday afternoon doubleheader with Montana State-Billings at Karl Brooks Field.

The Red Storm (4-3) used a big second inning to roll to an 11-3 five-inning victory in game one, but struggled at the plate in game two, falling 4-1 to the YellowJackets.

GAME ONE

Dixie State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning when Josey Hartman (Mapleton, Utah/Maple Mountain HS) singled, then scored on a fielding error to start things off. Brooklyn Beardshear (Tucson, Ariz./Sahuaro HS) later doubled to center field, scoring Shelby Yung (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) from second base. Beardshear advanced to third on a passed ball, then scored after an illegal pitch by the MSUB pitcher.

The Red Storm picked up where they left off in the second inning, adding five runs to take an 8-0 lead. Dani Bartholf (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert HS) reached first base on an error by the shortstop and later scored when Hartman singled to singled to center field. Autumn Woodfall (Kaysville, Utah/Davis HS) followed up the play with a 2-RBI single of her own, scoring Hartman and Taylor Godfrey (Buckeye, Ariz./Estrella Foothills HS). Yung scored later when Beardshear recorded her second hit of the day, and Kaitlyn Delange (Cedar City, Utah/Canyon View HS) scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Jessica Gonzalez (Kingsburg, Calif./Kingsburg HS).

The Yellowjackets got on the scoreboard with one run in third inning and two more in the fourth inning to cut the lead to 8-3, but it didn't take long for the Storm to again extend the lead.

DSU ended the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, pushing across three runs to secure the victory. Paulson started the rally with a single and later advanced to second on a passed ball. Bartholf then brought her home with a 2-RBI home run blast over the left field wall. Hartman ended the game with a double down the left field line, scoring Sarah Good (Castle Rock, Colo. /Castle View HS) from first base.

Hartman led the way for DSU, going 3 for 4 at the plate with two RBI. Beardshear went 2 for 2 with 2 RBI of her own, and Godfrey finished the game going 2 for 3. Alexis Barkwell (San Diego, Calif./North Medford HS) (1-0) picked up the win in the pitcher's circle, giving up three runs on six hits in five innings of work.

GAME TWO

Montana State-Billings struck first in the third inning after both teams went scoreless through the first two innings. With runners on the corners with one out, the Yellowjackets sent the runner from first to second. Autumn Woodfall (Kaysville, Utah/Davis HS)'s throw from home sailed into center field, allowing the runner to score from third. MSUB added to the lead in the top of the fourth inning when pitcher Megan Dettling sent the 1-2 pitch into the palm trees in left field.

Dixie State pulled a run back in the bottom of the fourth when Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, Utah/Stansbury HS) drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs, but the Red Storm were unable to take further advantage of the bases loaded situation. Hartman lined out to left field in the next at-bat for DSU, and the Storm left three runners on base.

MSUB added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning when a fielding error at first base allowed the runs to cross the plate.

The 4-1 lead would prove insurmountable as the Red Storm stranded two runners in the sixth inning and another in the seventh. For the game, DSU finished with three hits and left a combined 11 runners on base, including leaving the bases loaded twice.

"We just didn't hit the ball well in the second game," head coach Randy Simkins said. "We've got to learn to take advantage of those situations. The fielding errors we had were secondary tonight. We've got to hit the ball better."

Kristie Johnson (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral HS) led the way in game two, going 2 for 3 at the plate. Madi Dove (Cypress, Calif./Cypress HS) (0-1) and Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, Calif./Highland HS) split time in the pitcher's circle, with Dove (two strikeouts) pitching the first four innings and taking the loss. Feickert finished with five strikeouts in three innings of work.

The Storm will host its second tournament in as many weeks, as Western Oregon, Western New Mexico, California Baptist, Western Washington, and Hawai'i Hilo join DSU and MSUB for games on Friday through Sunday.
