Storm bats come alive in win over Western Oregon

The No. 2 Dixie State softball team pounded out 11 hits in a 4-1 win over Western Oregon Friday afternoon at the Canyons Softball Complex.

The Red Storm (5-3) bounced back from a 3-hit outing in a loss to Montana State-Billings on Wednesday, as eight players recorded hits and four finished with at least one RBI in the win.

"We played a complete game today," head coach Randy Simkins said. "We did give up the one error, but we finally hit the ball really well. Anytime you finish with 11 hits, good things are going to happen.

Janessa Bassett (Stansbury Park, Utah/Stansbury HS) broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third inning (DSU was the designated visiting team) with a double to left center, scoring Dani Bartholf (Gilbert, Ariz./Gilbert HS) from first base to take a 1-0 lead. The Storm added to the lead one inning later when Autumn Woodfall (Kaysville, Utah/Davis HS) was hit by a pitch and later scored when Jessica Gonzalez (Kingsburg, Calif./Kingsburg HS) singled to right field.

The Wolves cut the deficit in half in the bottom half of the fourth inning when designated player Brandy Knowles knocked a 2-out double to right center field, bringing a run across from first base.

But 2-1 was as close as WOU would get, as Dixie State answered with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Bassett started the rally with a stand-up triple to center field, followed by an RBI single by Josey Hartman (Mapleton, Utah/Maple Mountain HS). Shelby Yung (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) followed suit with a single and later scored when Woodfall singled to right field for the fourth and final DSU run of the game.

Woodfall and Gonzalez set the pace at the plate for the Red Storm and each finished the game 2 for 3 with an RBI. Aryn Feickert (Lancaster, Calif./Highland HS) tossed a gem in the pitcher's circle, throwing a complete game and recording nine strikeouts with just two walks.

Dixie State will return to action on Saturday with games vs. Montana State-Billings at 10 a.m. and Western Washington at 3 p.m. at the Canyons Softball Complex.
