Storm defeat top-seeded Broncos, Pfatenhauer wins 100th game

Dixie State wins 2-1 over CPP to stay alive in NCAA West Regional

WALNUT, Calif. – With its proverbial backs against the wall and facing a team that swept them to begin the regular season, a lot of people would have give Dixie State baseball slim on no chance to defeat Cal Poly Pomona in the regional.

Freshman pitcher Dylan File (St. George, UT/Desert Hills) tossed 6 2/3 innings of two-hit baseball to hold off the Broncos while senior infielder Yuto Kata (Chiba, Japan/Juan Diego (Utah)) drove in a two runs on a play with an RBI single and throwing error to push the Red Storm to a 2-1 victory on day two of the NCAA Division II West Regional at Mazmanian Field.

The win improves the Storm to 32-18 on the season and gave head coach Chris Pfatenhauer his 100th career victory at Dixie State.

File and Cal Poly Pomona's Cody Ponce matched scoreless innings over the first five frames. Friday's pitching matchup was a rematch of the series finale back on Feb. 8, won by the Broncos 6-4.

Dixie State got on the board with a two-out, error-assisted rally. Junior designated hitter Sam Hall (Ogden, UT/Bonneville) drew a walk from Ponce and sophomore outfielder Trey Kamachi (Kapolei, HI/Kapolei) reached after his groundball bounced underneath the CPP shortstop. Kata beat out a ground ball toward the shortstop hole to score Hall. When the throw to first bounced passed the bag, Kamachi rounded third and scored on the error.

It would be all the support File and a duo of relievers would need. The freshman struck out three of his five overall batters in the first two innings and did not allow a base runner into scoring position until the eighth. Cal Poly Pomona cashed in with the bases loaded and one out with a sacrifice fly to left field. Pfatenhauer relieved File with junior Jeremy Alderman (Cheney, WA/Cheney) to get out of the jam. He did, with one pitch, getting a fly ball to retire the Broncos in the seventh.

Alderman retired the side in order with a pair of strikeouts in the eighth inning.

Senior closer Evan Parker (Ogden, UT/Bonneville) walked the first two batters in the top of the ninth, placing the tying run on second base with no outs. Attempting to bunt, CPP's Michael Zidek popped out to third base. Parker got a fly ball to right field and struck out Mike Philp to end the game.

Dixie State will face off against UC San Diego in another elimination game on Saturday at 3 p.m. Pacific (4 p.m. Mountain).
