Storm eliminated from West Regional with 7-0 loss to UCSD

PacWest champs fall one day short of playing for region title

WALNUT, Calif. - The Dixie State baseball team was eliminated from the NCAA West Regionals on Saturday afternoon, falling to UC San Diego, 7-0, at Mazmanian Field.

UCSD (35-20) scored single runs in the second and third innings against Dixie State and secured a 7-0 cushion after six innings. The Bruins managed only three hits in their final game of the season.

Dan Kolodin (5-1) earned the win for the Tritons, allowing no runs and two hits in six innings while striking out four.

"We have a great group," head coach Chris Pfatenhauer said. "It's our fourth straight regional. We are knocking on the door and trying to get to that next step."

The Red Storm's loss on Saturday capped another strong season in which Dixie State bounced back from a 0-7 start and secured back-to-back Pacific West Conference titles for the first time in program history.

Against UCSD, freshman starting pitcher Aaron Pope (Chubbuck, ID/Highland) absorbed the loss (4-4). The southpaw allowed five runs, four earned on three hits in 4 1/3 innings. The Storm bullpen limited UC San Diego to two runs over the final 4 2/3 frames.

Dixie State did not get a runner into scoring position until the last innings, taking advantage of three walks to load the bases with two outs.

The Tritons benefitted in the second inning from an error and a sacrifice bunt to setup a two-out RBI single to left field. They manufactured their second run with a leadoff single, an advancing groundball and a RBI single to right center in the third inning. UCSD would add three more runs in the fifth inning and two runs in the sixth inning.

Sophomores Trey Kamachi (Kapolei, HI/Kapolei) and Miles Bice (Henderson, NV/Coronado) led the Red Storm at the plate, going 1-for-4.

Dixie State finished the year with a 32-19 record.

"Really proud of this team," Pfathenhauer added. "We're excited to get over that hump next year."
