Red Storm Fall in Regional Opener, 2-1, to CBU

Late rallies fall short on day one of #NCAAD2West

WALNUT, Calif. – The Dixie State baseball team could not get its offense revving fast enough, dropping its opener of the 2015 NCAA Division II West Regional 2-1 to California Baptist on Thursday at Mt. San Antonio College's Mazmanian Field. Jumping down to the one-loss bracket, the Red Storm awaits the winner of game three between host Cal Poly Pomona and Point Loma.

Dixie State is now 31-18 on the season, while California Baptist moves to 31-20 overall.

CBU opened up the scoring in the bottom of the second inning, getting two runs with a RBI single and a sacrifice squeeze bunt. DSU starting pitcher Porter Clayton (Idaho Falls, ID/Bonneville) induced a pop out and a ground out to keep the Lancers from scoring more runs.

The Storm looked as if they would tie the game after getting the bases loaded with nobody out in the seventh inning with a lead-off double from senior Kevin Kline (Las Vegas, NV/Rancho), a walk to junior Sam Hall (Ogden, UT/Bonneville) and an infield single from sophomore Trey Kamachi (Kapolei, HI/Kapolei). Dixie State pushed across a run when senior Yuto Kata (Chiba, Japan/Juan Diego (Utah)) hit a fly ball to center field, allowing Kline to tag in from third base.

With the potential tying run at third and go-ahead run at second, DSU did not get anything else after junior Cam Gust (Riverton, UT/Riverton) lined out to first base and junior Zach Watts (West Jordan, UT/Copper Hills) struck out.

Dixie State tried another rally in the eighth inning, but Lancer starting pitcher Adam Hofacket got senior Donald Glover (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy) to ground into an inning ending double play. Hofacket struck out the side in the top of the ninth to close out a five-hit complete game.

Clayton took the loss (5-5) after surrendering two runs on two hits with four walks in just over two innings. Senior Bronson Anderson (Lehi, UT/Lehi) tossed four shutout innings giving up just one hit. Juniors Jeremy Alderman (Cheney, WA/Cheney) and Kolton Brost (Monsa, UT/Payson) each threw scoreless frames in the seventh and eighth innings respectively.

Kline went 1-for-4 with his team-leading 16th double of the year.

Dixie State will face the winner of the Cal Poly Pomona/Point Loma contest in an elimination game for the Storm. The game is scheduled to begin a 3 p.m. Pacific on Friday, weather permitting in Southern California.
