Baseball feels agony of defeat, thrill of victory in DH split

Friday DH featured PLNU epic ninth inning comeback, DSU offensive explosion in game two

ST. GEORGE, Utah – Offensive explosion from both sides of the field highlighted a wild opening doubleheader between visiting Point Loma and the Dixie State baseball team. PLNU scored seven runs in the ninth inning and held off a DSU comeback to win game one, 8-7. Dixie State scored in each of game two's first five innings to run away with a 20-9 victory in the nightcap.

With the Pacific West Conference split, Dixie State moved to 30-16 on the season and 23-7 in the PacWest.

Junior shortstop Tanner Morache (Surrey, Canada/Surrey) had a sparkling day at the plate. He finished 6-for-7 with four runs scored and six runs batted in. His RBI production came in game two, tying Morache for the fourth-best run production by a single player in DSU history.

GAME ONE
Dixie State played well enough for eight innings to earn a victory, but a horrific top half of the ninth inning spoiled the game. Morache scored on a Donald Glover (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy) groundout in the first inning, Kevin Kline (Las Vegas, NV/Rancho) blasted a solo home run in the fourth and Glover added two more runs batted in with a double to the gap in the fifth.

Trey Kamachi (Kapolei, HI/Kapolei) added a run-scoring single in the bottom of the eighth to give DSU a 5-1 lead in support of starting pitcher Dylan File (St. George, UT/Desert Hills). The freshman tossed 6 2/3 innings allowing one run on six hits.

Point Loma's seven run outburst in the ninth erased File's possible win. With two outs and scored tied up at 5-5, Kellan Sheppard lifted a pitch from Evan Parker (Ogden, UT/Bonneville) over the wall in left field for a three-run home run.

Dixie State put the first two runners aboard after leadoff singles from Zach Watts (West Jordan, UT/Copper Hills) and Morache. Following a wild pitch, RBI groundouts from Drew McLaughlin (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain) and Glover put the Red Storm within a run. Kline tried to keep the rally alive, but his sharp line drive was speared at third base for the final out.

Parker took the loss in relief surrendering four runs on four hits in 2/3 of a frame.

GAME TWO
In response to a pair of first inning PLNU runs, Dixie State sent 12 batters to the plate in the bottom of the first and posted eight runs. Watts had a two-run double down the right field line to highlight the frame.

Morache had a RBI sacrifice fly in the first and provided the power swing in the second inning with a bases-clearing double to right center, plating three runs. He added a two-run single in the fourth inning to post six runs batted in over four plate appearances.

Watts accounted for the 19th and 20th runs of the game with a towering home run to straight away center field in the seventh, his second homer of the year.

Dixie State reached the 20-run mark for the second time this season. Previously, the Storm picked up a 21-3 victory over Academy of Art on March 27.

Aaron Pope (Chubbuck, ID/Highland) benefitted from the massive offensive support to earn the win. He scattered five run son nine hits over five innings to improve to 4-3 on the year. Jordan Dreibelbis (Las Vegas, NV/Faith Lutheran) capped off the game with two scoreless innings of relief.

The teams will wrap up the series with a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. Mountain time.
