Storm closes regular season with series split

Senior Day split puts postseason spot in limbo

ST. GEORGE, Utah – Fighting for a Pacific West Conference championship and trying to secure a fourth trip to the NCAA West Regional, the Dixie State baseball team split a pair of games against Point Loma on Saturday afternoon. The No. 17 Red Storm tallied three runs in the eighth inning of a 5-2 victory in the opener, but managed just four hits in an 8-1 loss in the series finale.

To begin the day, junior starting pitcher Porter Clayton (Idaho Falls, ID/Bonneville) allowed just two runs – only one was earned – on three hits in six innings of work. The southpaw struck our four batters in the first three innings and battled out of a bases loaded jam (two walks, hit batter) in the fourth.

Due to a Point Loma runs in the fifth and sixth innings, Clayton would not factor in the decision. Junior relievers Jeremy Alderman (Cheney, WA/Cheney) and Kolton Brost (Monsa, UT/Payson) each kept the Sea Lions scoreless in their inning of work.

Then came the bottom of the eighth. Junior outfield Zach Watts (West Jordan, UT/Copper Hills) led off with a single and advanced on a sacrifice by junior infielder Tanner Morache (Surrey, Canada/Surrey). Sophomore infielder Drew McLaughlin (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain) bounced a single through the right side to plate the go-ahead run. Added insurance came when senior infielder Kevin Kline (Las Vegas, NV/Rancho) lifted a two-run home run to left-center field earning the Storm a three-spot.

Senior closer Evan Parker (Ogden, UT/Bonneville) recorded three groundball outs to notch his 12th save. Brost took the win in relief, improving to 3-0.

Morache finished 2-for 4, while Kline and senior infielder Yuto Kata (Chiba, Japan/Juan Diego (Utah)) were both 2-for-3.

Although senior pitcher Bronson Anderson (Lehi, UT/Lehi) tossed three solid innings in his first start of the season, Dixie State was unable to make good use of it. Anderson yielded an unearned run on four hits, fanning one.

Things look bright early on, but the visitors posted eight unanswered runs, including a pinch-hit grand slam in the sixth frame to take the seven-inning contest.

A two-out double by senior outfielder Donald Glover (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy) and following single by Kline resulted in a first inning run. It would be the only one the Storm drove in.

DSU put two runners on the paths in the sixth inning and one more in the seventh, but could not close the gap.

Freshman reliever Julian Burrola (Las Vegas, NV/Coronado) got tagged with the loss surrendering the go-ahead runs on a DSU throwing error in the fourth inning.

The split take Dixie State's overall record to 31-17, while its PacWest mark goes to 24-8. The Red Storm slipped into second place in the league, one game behind California Baptist in the loss column.

Dixie State will wait eight days to learn its postseason fate. The NCAA Division II Baseball Selection Show airs Sunday, May 10 at 8 p.m. Mountain time.
