Top of the lineup shines, Parker dominates in Storm extra-inning win

Dixie State earns big PacWest win at APU, 8-7

AZUSA, Calif. – Two regionally ranked teams thought nine regulation innings were not enough Thursday. It took 12 innings and a great relief appearance from senior closer Evan Parker (Ogden, UT/Bonneville) for Dixie State to knock off host Azusa Pacific 8-7 in Pacific West Conference play.

The Red Storm, ranked sixth in the first NCAA West Region poll, improved to 28-13 on the season and 21-4 in the PacWest. APU, ranked ahead of DSU at No. 2 in the West, fell to 27-16, 17-12 in league.

Tanner Morache (Surrey, Canada/Surrey) began the game with a bang, homering to left field for a 1-0 lead. Morache became the second consecutive leadoff man to hit a home run in his first at bat on the road at APU (Garrett Nash, 2013). Kevin Kline (Las Vegas, NV/Rancho) added an RBI single and later stole home to give the Storm a 3-0 lead.

Sam Hall (Ogden, UT/Bonneville) in the third inning and Drew McLaughlin (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain) in the fourth inning added RBI singles.

Dixie State fell behind by a pair of runs entering the eighth inning, but McLaughlin launched his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left-center field, knotting the game at 7-7.

That score held until Kline produced the go-ahead swing with a RBI sacrifice fly in the 12th inning, scoring Miles Bice (Henderson, NV/Coronado).

Morache and McLaughlin led the Red Storm offense. Morache finished 3-for 7, scored two runs and knocked in one while McLaughlin went 3-for-6, scored twice and knocked home three.

Evan Parker (Ogden, UT/Bonneville) earned the winning decision for Dixie State. He threw 3.1 magnificent innings of hitless relief while striking out a career-high six batters. Starting pitcher Dylan File (St. George, UT/Desert Hills) gave up five runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings, striking out five.

Games two and three of the PacWest series are set for a Friday doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. Pacific (3 p.m. Mountain). Links for live stats and a pay video feed are available at DixieAtheltics.com.
