Storm baseball downed in doubleheader

APU explodes for 39 hits in two games

AZUSA, Calif. – Azusa Pacific combined for 39 hits over two games as Dixie State baseball dropped a pair of Pacific West Conference games 12-4 and 15-5 on Friday.

The Red Storm could not overcome the offensive onslaught, dropping to 28-15 on the season and 21-6 in PacWest play.

GAME ONE
APU (29-16, 19-12 PacWest) starter Jacob Cage quieted the Dixie State bats for eight innings. The senior right-hander allowed just one hit, a fourth inning single by Donald Glover (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy), and struck out eight en route to his sixth win of the year.

DSU freshman pitcher Aaron Pope (Chubbuck, ID/Highland) labored through 2 2/3 innings (L, 3-3), allowing six runs on nine hits and struck out three. Julian Burrola (Las Vegas, NV/Coronado) struck out three over 3 2/3 innings of relief.

The Storm's offense came to life in the ninth inning. Drew McLaughlin (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain) and Donald Glover (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy) both reached on errors. Cam Gust (Riverton, UT/Riverton) and Gentry Hatch (Roosevelt, UT/Union) each had run-scoring singles while Trey Kamachi (Kapolei, HI/Kapolei) bounced a single to right field that plated the final two runs.

Azusa Pacific dominated the hit column, 19 to four.

GAME TWO
Momentum gained after a first-inning run did not hold after APU put up crooked numbers in the second, third and fifth innings respectively.

Glover plated Tanner Morache (Surrey, Canada/Surrey) with a sacrifice fly to left field for an early 1-0 lead.

Tanner Howell (Boulder City, NV/Boulder City), making his second consecutive series start, worked out of trouble in the first inning, but offered a lead off solo homerun and a two-run single in the third as the host Cougars took control. Howell took the losing decision (3-2) allowing four runs on six hits over 2 1/3 innings.

Glover added his second RBI of the game with a one-out single in the fourth and later added a third run batted in fifth to finish 2-for 3. Kevin Kline (Las Vegas, NV/Rancho) plated two more runs with a double to left field.

Dixie State will look for the series split on Saturday at 12 noon Pacific (1 p.m. Mountain).
