Storm drop first PacWest series of season

CBU takes finale 8-2

ST. GEORGE, Utah – In the span of one inning, California Baptist stymied a huge opportunity for the Dixie State baseball team and followed with a run scoring barrage aided by errors to win Saturday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field, 8-2.

The Lancers (23-15, 15-5 PacWest) earned a 3-1 series win and handed the Red Storm its first league series defeat in two years.

Dixie State pushed two runs across in the first inning with four consecutive singles. Cam Gust (Riverton, UT/Riverton) knocked in the first run with a flare to left field, scoring Drew McLaughlin (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain). Zach Watts (West Jordan, UT/Copper Hills) cashed in Donald Glover (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy) with a groundball to the right side.

Aaron Pope (Chubbuck, ID/Highland) worked through four innings of situations where CBU had four different runners in scoring position. Pope was able to get key strikeouts in the first two innings and ended a threat in the third inning inducing a ground ball double play.

The Storm had a great chance to add some runs in the bottom of the fourth after getting the bases loaded with nobody out. DSU was unable to execute against relievers brought into the game by CBU and left the frame without a run.

CBU would take the lead in the top of the fifth inning, scoring seven runs on four hits and taking advantage of four Dixie State errors. Two miscues came on groundballs that could have led to double plays, but ultimately extended the Lancers' rally.

Despite allowing only two earned runs, Pope took the loss (3-2) for DSU. In his 4.1 innings, he allowed six runs on seven hits, walked three and struck out three.

Kevin Kline (Las Vegas, NV/Rancho) led Dixie State going 3-for-4 at the plate, including a double.

Stephen Carabajal (2-3) fanned six over 4.1 relief innings to earn the win for CBU.

Dixie State (25-11, 20-4) steps away from home and PacWest play next weekend, traveling to Lacey, Wash., for a four-game series at Saint Martin's beginning Friday.
