Comeback falls short, Storm swept by CPP

ST. GEORGE, Utah – For the fourth straight game, the Dixie State baseball team found itself plagued by a barrage of offense from visiting Cal Poly Pomona. The Broncos scored five times in the third inning and held off a late rally from the Storm to win Sunday's series finale, 6-4, and wrap up a weekend sweep at Bruce Hurst Field.

The highly touted junior starter for CPP, Cody Ponce, scattered an earned run on three hits over four innings to earn the win in his season debut. Dixie State (0-4) freshman hurler Dylan File (St. George, UT/Desert Hills) did not make it past the third inning – taking the losing decision after giving up five runs on seven hits.

DSU got on the scoreboard with a run in the second inning against Ponce. Kevin Kline (Las Vegas, NV/Rancho) broke a 0-for-9 slump with a one out single to left field. Kline advanced to third on a following double from Austin Nelson (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial) and the bags loaded up after Yuto Kata (Chiba, Japan/Juan Diego (Utah)) walked. Gentry Hatch (Roosevelt, UT/Union) hit a slow roller up the middle and beat out an attempted double play at first to score Kline for a Dixie State 1-0 lead.

The cushion was short-lived due to the Broncos five-run third inning. Ryan Webberley's infield RBI single tied the game at 1-1 and Kyle Garlick pushed CPP ahead with a double down the left field line to plate Webberley. Michael Erb brought in two more late in the frame with a single through the left side.

Matt Munoz homered with one out in the fourth inning to increase the lead to 6-1.

Dixie State began its late push in the bottom of the seventh inning. Nelson led off with a single, advanced to second on a balk and reached third when Hatch reached safely on wild pitch ensuing after a dropped third strike. Miles Bice (Henderson, NV/Coronado) got the run across with a scoring sacrifice fly.

In the eighth, Drew McLaughlin (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain) walked and sped around to home when an errant throw from the CPP pitcher sailed past first base and deep into foul territory. Donald Glover (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy) cashed in Trey Kamachi (Kapolei, HI/Kapolei) on a sac fly. Two more runners found themselves in scoring position with two outs, but a fly ball down the left field line off the bat of pinch hitter Zach Zatts was caught for the inning's final out.

Tanner Morache (Surrey, Canada/Surrey) got aboard in the bottom of the ninth against CPP closer J.J. Franklin, but Drew McLaughlin (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain) bounced in a game-ending 6-4-3 double play to end things.

Nine different CPP players had hits, totaling 11 for the team. Erb and Webberley each had multi-hit efforts for the Broncos. Dixie State managed five hits, three of which came Nelson.

The Storm returns to action on Friday at 6 p.m. hosting the 4th-ranked Mavericks of Colorado Mesa (2-0).
