ST. GEORGE, Utah – Dixie State baseball posted its first game with more than 10 hits, but few came with runs attached to them after the third inning. After taking a one-run lead, DSU surrendered 10 unanswered runs in a 14-5 loss to No. 4/5 Colorado Mesa in non-conference play Friday night at Bruce Hurst Field.
The Mavericks (3-0) scored in every inning except the ninth. Kevan Elcock hit a solo home run in the top of the 4th that erased the early Dixie State (0-5) advantage. Later in the same inning, a two-out single from Austin Wallingford pushed across the go-ahead runs.
Porter Clayton (Idaho Falls, ID/Bonneville) took the brunt of the Maverick offense, allowing seven runs on eight hits over four innings. The Mavs would post runs on three more DSU relievers before Mitchell Franek (Grand Lake, CO/MIddle Park) posted the only 1-2-3 inning against CMU in the top of the ninth.
Offensively, the Red Storm had their best outing to date. Five of the team's 12 hits came in the third inning. Drew McLaughlin (Scottsdale, AZ/Desert Mountain) and Donald Glover (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy) both single with one out. Kevin Kline (Las Vegas, NV/Rancho) beat out a potential double play to score McLaughlin from third base. Trey Kamachi (Kapolei, HI/Kapolei) kept the rally alive with a base hit to right field and Zach Watts (West Jordan, UT/Copper Hills) secured his first DSU run batted in with a base hit to right.
The inning looked to be over when Yuto Kata (Chiba, Japan/Juan Diego (Utah)) popped up a ball into foul territory down the first base line. A moment of CMU miscommunication allowed the ball to bounce out of the first baseman's glove to the ground. On the subsequent pitch, Kata cued a double to the opposite field netting the tying and go-ahead runs for a 5-4 lead.
Four Dixie State players had multi-hit games – Tanner Morache (Surrey, Canada/Surrey), McLaughlin, Glover and Watts. The Mavericks had 14 hits led Elcock and Wallingford with three each.
Dixie State and Colorado Mesa will continue the series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.
