Mavs double up Storm in DH

DSU falls to 0-7 despite chance to knock off nationally ranked CMU

ST. GEORGE, Utah – Dixie State baseball dropped both games of a non-conference doubleheader to No. 4/5 Colorado Mesa, 10-5 and 3-2, on Saturday afternoon.

The Mavs used a 14-hit barrage in Saturday's opener, but it was Dixie State that had chances in both games that never came to fruition.

Yuto Kata (Chiba, Japan/Juan Diego (Utah)) put Dixie State (0-7) on the board with an RBI single in the second inning. Colorado Mesa (5-0) would score four times in the following half inning and the next seven runs overall.

Senior first baseman Kevin Kline (Las Vegas, NV/Rancho) broke out of an early offensive slump with a three-hit game that included his first home run of the season. Kline, Trey Kamachi (Kapolei, HI/Kapolei) and Donald Glover (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy) had nine of the Storm's 13 total hits.

Kyle Serrano paced the Mavericks with three hits and Austin Wallingford knocked in four.

In game two, we saw a pitcher's duel through the seven regulation innings. The freshman duo of Aaron Pope (Chubbuck, ID/Highland) and Dylan File (St. George, UT/Desert Hills) each threw three innings and combined to hold the Mavs to one run on five hits while fanning five. Evan Parker (Ogden, UT/Bonneville) stymied CMU in the seventh inning, but surrendered the go-ahead runs in the top of the eighth.

CMU scored its second run in an unusual fashion. With runners at second and third base, Parker set to intentionally walk the bases loaded. His first pitch outside the zone sailed to the backstop, allowing the CMU runner to score. A one-out double from Alex Fife proved to be the game-winning hit.

In the home half of the inning, Dixie State loaded the bases with nobody out. Miles Bice (Henderson, NV/Coronado) and Gentry Hatch (Roosevelt, UT/Union) led off the frame with single and Tanner Morache (Surrey, Canada/Surrey) joined the hit party with a perfect bunt down the third base line. Before the next toss to the plate, a throw from CMU reliever Tyler Ehlers to third for a pickoff got past his teammate allowing Bice to score.

From this point, Dixie State ran itself out of a prime chance for victory. Hatch got caught in no-man's land between third and home for the first out. With the potential tying runner at second, Kata flew out to center. Morache sensed an opening to tag up, but left the bag early. He was doubled off of second base to end the DSU rally and the game.

Morache led the Storm with two of the team's five hits in game two.

Dixie State will close out this non-conference series with Colorado Mesa on Sunday at 11 a.m.
