Early offense leads Dixie State to first win

Seven-game opening skid snapped in Sunday matinee

ST. GEORGE, Utah – The 2015 Dixie State baseball season matched the slow start posted by last year's squad, both setting the foundation with an 0-7 record. But similar to last year, the Red Storm bounced back to get into the win column in the eighth contest of the year.

Redshirt freshman pitcher Tanner Howell (Boulder City, NV/Boulder City) allowed two runs over five innings and early offensive bursts allowed Dixie State to avoid a series sweep, defeating No. 5 Colorado Mesa 7-6 on Sunday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field.

Dixie State (1-7) sprinted out to a 6-0 lead after four innings. The Storm almost closed the third frame without a run, but a throwing error on a Trey Kamachi (Kapolei, HI/Kapolei) groundball scored Miles Bice (Henderson, NV/Coronado). The extra at-bats proved detrimental to the visiting Mavericks (5-1). Donald Glover (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy) lined a double down the right field line to score Kamachi. On the very next pitch from CMU starter Dakota Behr, Kevin Kline (Las Vegas, NV/Rancho) lifted a shot over the left field wall – his second home run of the season.

The Red Storm added two runs in the fourth inning with a one-out double to right from Tanner Morache (Surrey, Canada/Surrey).

Howell limited the Mavs offense to seven hits and had two strikeouts in his 2015 debut to earn the winning decision.

Dixie State cashed in a critical insurance run in the seventh inning. After Kamachi led off with a walk and advanced to third on Glover's single to right, Kline bounced into a double play that plated Kamachi.

Three Storm relievers – Jeremy Alderman (Cheney, WA/Cheney), Jordan Dreibelbis (Las Vegas, NV/Faith Lutheran) and Evan parker – each allowed at least one run, but all were successful in keeping the Mavs from scoring more than two runs in any single inning. Parker induced a crucial double play after allowing the first two CMU runners aboard in the ninth. Kepping the potential tying run at first base by inducing a harmless fly ball to center field earned Parker his first season save.

Glover, Kline and Zach Watts (West Jordan, UT/Copper Hills) each went 2-for-4 for Dixie State. Trevor Elcock went 3-for-5 with one RBI and Bligh Madris had three RBI for the Mavericks.

Dixie State returns to action against Montana State Billings on Thursday, Feb. 19. Game time at Bruce Hurst Field is 6 p.m.
