ALL-TIME vs. CBU: DSU leads the all-time series 3-3, having defeated CBU twice last season to tie the all-time series. DSU defeated CBU 63-56 at VanDyne Gymnasium on 1/5/13. DSU has won three consecutive games.

LAST TIME AGAINST the LANCERS: Johnna Brown (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial ) has dominated her opponents all year long and tonight was no exception. She led the Dixie State women's team to a 73-69 Pacific West Conference win over California Baptist by scoring 24 points and grabbing 13 rebounds en-route to her ninth double double of the season. Brown was 10 for 17 from the floor, 4 of 7 from the foul line and added seven assists and three stills in 37 minutes tonight. The team performance helped interim head coach Derek Dawes earns his first ever-coaching victory tonight.
A Erica Hayes (East Palo Alto, CA/Menlo-Atherton) jumper with 12:26 left in the first half gave the Red Storm a 12-10 lead that they never relinquished. They led by as many as 10 in the first half and 13 in the second half. The Lancers began to chip away at the Red Storm lead heading towards the halftime break, getting within six late. A final possession in which the Lancers gave up two offensive boards and three shots led to a Dixie State bucket and a 37-29 lead heading into the break, however. With just over five to play CBU cut what had been a double-digit Red Storm lead to six at 63-57.

SCOUTING CALIFORNIA BAPTIST: The Cougars enter the game with a 5-8 overall record and 3-4 in the PWC and have won their last two games. The Lancers score 68.9 points per game and allow one point more at 69.9. They shoot 37.1 percent from the field and 30.2 percent from behind the arc. They are led in scoring by Kamille Diaz at 12.7 ppg and she averages 3.7 rpg. Ashley jones also chips in 11.4 ppg and Cassidy Mihalko adds 10.4 to the Lancers balanced attack.

ALL-TIME vs. APU: Azusa Pacific leads the all-time series 3-0, having won the last time the two squads met last week in St George on 1/11/14. The Cougars prevailed 72-56.

LAST TIME AGAINST the COUGARS:  DSU was led by Haley Holmstead (American Fork, UT/American Fork) and her 23 points and 10 rebounds. Taylor Mann (Castle Dale, UT/Emery) grabbed her fourth consecutive double double with 10 points and 16 rebounds. Azusa Pacific (8-4/6-0 PWC) remained perfect in PacWest play and were led by 27 points from Kelly Hardeman and a double double from Sandy Valles who scored 13 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. Trailing 36-28 after intermission, DSU closed the gap on the Cougars and cut the lead to two points at 50-48 with 7:48 remaining in the game. But the Cougars had different ideas for the Red Storm and cruised outscored the Red Storm 22-8 to end the game and remain unbeaten. DSU outrebounded APU 61-47, but field goal percentage plagued the squad again. DSU shot just 21 percent in the second half and finished at just under 30 percent for the game.

SCOUTING AZUSA PACIFIC: The Cougars are 9-4 overall and 7-0 in PacWest play. After last weeks ARTU loss, they sit a half game ahead of the Urban Knights on top of the PWC standings. They average 69.9 ppg while allowing just less than 62 points. They have a 6.2 ppg margin of victory while they shoot 41.8 percent from the field and 33.9 percent from three-point range. They are led by the one two punch of Kelly Hardeman (17.9 ppg, 8.3 rpg) and Sendy Valles (15.7 ppg, 8.1 rpg). The third double figure scorer for APU is Allison Greene at 13.3 ppg. They are coached by fourth year head coach T.J. Hardeman.

LAST TIME OUT: ST. GEORGE, UT-- Haley Holmstead (American Fork, UT/American Fork) and Brianna White (Phoenix, AZ/Tolleson Union) led the Dixie State University women's basketball team to a 75-62 win over Fresno Pacific University tonight inside the Burns Arena. Trailing 33-27 at intermission, the Red Storm (7-7/5-3 PWC) used a 9-5 run to open the second half and cut the Sunbird (3-10/3-4 PWC) lead to 40-38 with 15:31 left in the game. A minute and thirty seconds later, White found Taylor Maynes (Salome, AZ/Salome) for a layup that tied the game at 40. Austen Harris (Acworth, GA/Desert Vista) then stole the ball from Breann Buczek and found White who was fouled and went to the line and connected on both free-throws to give the Storm the lead for good with 11:39 left. White scored 14 of her 16 points in the second half, including two big three-point shots. Fresno Pacific didn't back down despite playing without their leading scorer and rebounder and cut the Red Strom lead to five points with 4:55 remaining. Kaylah Miller (San Diego, CA/La Jolla Country Day) would follow with a jumper and a three pointer in about 30 seconds to build the DSU lead back to 11 points and put the knife in the heart of the Sunbirds. The Red Storm committed 28 turnovers to Fresno Pacific 18. But DSU capitalized by grabbing 45 rebounds to 19 for FPU. The major difference came at the free throw line, where the Red Storm were 28-32 and the Sunbirds finished just 5-8 in the game.

RED STORM NOTES: DSU had its four game win streak snapped on Saturday against Azusa Pacific, but rebounded nicely against Fresno Pacific on Monday to get back to .500 for the season. The Red Storm are 7-7 overall and 5-3 PWC play, currently in fourth place. DSU is lead in scoring by PWC leading scorer Haley Holmstead (American Fork, UT/American Fork) and her 21.8 ppg. Kaylah Miller (San Diego, CA/La Jolla Country Day) adds 13.6 ppg (12th) and Brianna White (Phoenix, AZ/Tolleson Union) 10.7. Rebounding has been a real key to victories for DSU and Taylor Mann (Castle Dale, UT/Emery) leads the squad with 7.6 rpg (9th in PWC). Nanea Woods (Portland, OR/St. Mary's Academy) (7.1 rpg) and Haileigh Emerine (Spanish Fork, UT/Spanish Fork) (8.9) have come on strong of late, averaging high numbers during conference contests. The Red Storm lead the PacWest in several categories, with most of them centered around its ability to rebound the basketball. DSU grabs 51.6 rpg and outrebound their opponents by a margin of 10.6 per game.

The Storm average 74.3 ppg , shooting 36.6 percent from the field and 27.3 percent from behind the arc. The real issue for the DSU squad has been allowing 79.2 ppg and committing 20.4 turnovers per game. But, head coach Catherria Turner has the team headed in the right direction and look for them to continue to build on that during its road trip.
