Cougars Claw Way Past Red Storm

Box Score

SAINT GEORGE, UT -- The Dixie State women's basketball team dropped a Pacific West Conference match-up 73-62 tonight to Azusa Pacific inside the Burns Arena.

Despite another stellar performance for forward Johnna Brown (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial ), the Red Storm were not able to overcome the early run from the Cougars and their balanced attack that had four players finish with 15 plus points. Brown carded here ninth double double of the season by scoring 21 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. She also added five steals and three assists.

DSC took an early 2-0 lead, only to see APU go on a 13-2 run and take a 13-4 lead at the first media timeout. The Red Storm would never lead again in the game and trailed for 39 of the 40 minutes.

Only five players scored for APU, DSC held the Cougar bench to zero points. Hannah Kenny was the leading scoring for the Cougars with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Kelly Hardeman added 18 points, Maddy Barrett 16 and Sullivan Ziegler had 15 points.

Despite forcing APU to shoot a just 33.8 percent from the field, turnovers stifled any sort of Red Storm comeback. DSC committed 20 and that led to 22 Cougar points.

Trailing by 66-56 with 2:20 left in the game, the Red Storm forced three consecutive APU turnovers and cut the lead to 66-60 with 50 seconds left. DSC had the ball under their own basket trailing by six, but an errant Erica Hayes (East Palo Alto, CA/Menlo-Atherton) jumper forced the Red Storm to foul and sent the Cougars to the line. They locked it up with stellar free throw shotting down the stretch and finished an impressive 21-24 for the game.

Mandy Munns (Brigham City, UT/Box Elder) finsihed with 11 points and five rebounds as her solid performance went by the wayside. The Red Storm shot 39.7 percent from the field.

The Red Storm drop to 8-9 overall and 6-3 in the PWC. APU improves to 7-8 overall and 4-3 in the PWC.

Dixie State travels to nationally ranked Grand Canyon next Saturday. Tip off is scheduled for 4:30 pm.
