Walkoff single leads to big DSC win in league, region

ST. GEORGE – Yuto Kata (Chiba, Japan/Juan Diego (Utah)) singled to center field in the bottom of the ninth inning, scoring pinch runner Quinn Boyer (Ogden, UT/Bonneville HS), to erase the stigma of a blown save and give Dixie State an 8-7 victory in Pacific West Conference play over Grand Canyon on Thursday night.

Dixie State, playing its first non-doubleheader of the season, improved to 28-15 on the year and 24-13 in the PacWest. GCU fell to 24-21 and 21-16 PWC.

The Red Storm took advantage of walks offered by GCU starter Brady Wager. In the second inning after a pair of singles, Ammon Zitting (Pleasant Grove. UT/Lone Peak) and Kata drew a pair of free passes for the Storm's first run. Garrett Nash (Draper, UT/Jordan) followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to take a 2-1 lead.

GCU rebounded quickly with three runs in the next half inning and had Joey Bristyan take home on the tail end of a double steal in the 4^th for a 5-2 lead.

Wager lost command and loaded the bases with a pair of walks and an error on a sacrifice bunt opportunity. Nash came through against with a double to the gap, scoring Jayden Darrington (Washington, UT/Desert Hills) and Zitting. Colton Yack (South Jordan, UT/Bingham) tied the game with a bunt to first base that plated Kata.

The game remained tied until the sixth inning. Zitting reached on an error, scooted around the bases and touched home on a wild pitch. The storm added an insurance run in the eighth on a Cedric Johnson (Thatcher, AZ/Thatcher) double to left.

Three consecutive hits beginning the ninth inning for GCU closed the Red Storm lead to 7-6. A Tagg Duce line out to right field scored the game-tying run.

DSC began its half of the ninth with a Littlewood single and a walk to pinch hitter Eric Bond (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon). Boyer entered to run for Littlewood and advanced to third on a well-executed sacrifice bunt from Zitting. GCU handed the ball to closer Mark Jarrett to stymie the rally. On the first pitch he threw, Kata lined a single up the middle to plate Boyer for the win.

Daniel Zapata (Mesa, AZ/Westwood) earned the win in relief after surrendering the tying liner in the ninth (3-1).

The two teams return to the field for a doubleheader Friday at 4 p.m.
