At the age of 12, Kata played in the Little League World Series for Chiba City, Japan. Here is an excerpt from a MLB.com article about Kata's play in an 11-0 win over Canada:

Sakamoto also benefited from some nifty defense, highlighted by second baseman Yuto Kata. The heady Kata saw the catcher flash the sign for a fourth-inning pitch and shaded toward the base, anticipating a ball hit his way. Moments later Kata dove to his right, snared a skipping grounder and fired to first to rob a hit.
"When it came, I reacted quickly and made the play," Kata said through a translator.
