#8 Dominican (CA) upends #7 Dixie State to claim 7th place at 2012 PacWest Championship



SAN RAFAEL, CA – Eighth-seed Dominican (CA) rallied from a 2-1 doubles deficit to defeat #7 Dixie State 5-4 and grab seventh place at the 2012 Pacific West Conference Women's Tennis Championship.

The victory occurred on Saturday, April 21, at The Marin Tennis Club in San Rafael, CA.

The Red Storm jumped out to a 2-1 lead after taking second doubles 8-5 (Allison Evans (Safford, AZ/Safford ) & Lindsay Snow (Saint George, UT/Pine View)) and third doubles 8-6 (Kristen Nichols (Elwood, UT/Bear River) & Sierra Smith (Denton, TX/John H Guyer)).

Snow also won sixth singles 6-0, 6-1 for Dixie State, while Sarah Hughes (Bountiful, UT/Woods Cross HS) snagged third singles 6-2, 6-3.

But the Penguins rallied to capture the match after winning four singles bouts, including first singles with Irina Morozova (6-0, 6-1) and second singles behind Gaby Verspieren (6-1, 6-1). The duo teamed up to grab first doubles 9-8 (7-3 tiebreaker).

Jamie Fernandez and Jobeth Pascua were key elements in the victory as well. Pascual won fifth singles 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 in the first singles match of the entire three-day tournament that stretched to three sets.

Fernandez claimed fourth singles 6-2, 6-2.
