ST. GEORGE – Behind a season-high eight strikeouts, Mike Dedrick (Cedar City, UT/Canyon View) tossed seven shutout innings in a Dixie State College 13-0 win over California Baptist in the first game of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader Saturday. The Lancers rebounded to win the series finale 8-5 in seven innings and secure the PWC title in the program's first year in the league.

The seventh straight doubleheader split moved Dixie State to 27-15 overall and 23-13 in the PacWest.

DSC took an early lead in Saturday's opener as Cedric Johnson (Thatcher, AZ/Thatcher) bombed the first pitch he saw off 10-game winner Jon Bengard over the fence in right field, his fifth of the year. He later added an RBI single in the fifth and Tyson Littlewood (St. George. UT/Pine View HS) executed a perfect suicide squeeze to plate Yuto Kata (Chiba, Japan/Juan Diego (Utah)) for a 3-0 lead.

The floodgates opened in the next inning with the Storm plating eight runs, each tally coming with two outs. Garrett Nash (Draper, UT/Jordan) lined a double to left to begin the scoring, then Colton Yack (South Jordan, UT/Bingham) lifted his first homer of the season to right. After a Johnson walk and Littlewood single, Joe Andrade (Yuma, AZ/San Luis ) lined a hit to center to get Johnson home. Eric Bond (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) received a free pass with the bases loaded and Ammon Zittin (Pleasant Grove. UT/Lone Peak)g singled home two. Kata capped the rally with an RBI single to center.

A pair of runs crossed in the eighth on RBI singles from Nash and Johnson.

Dedrick (W, 5-3) took care of the high-powered Lancer offense, holding CBU to four hits over seven quality innings while striking out eight. Stefan Cantwell (South Jordan, UT/Bingham) and Kyle DiMartino (Las Vegas, NV/Durango) each added hitless frames to ensure the shutout – the first time CBU went without a run in a game since March 18, 2011.

Bengard walked nine batters in five innings to take his first loss of the year (10-1).

CBU flexed its muscle in the finale bombing four home runs, two coming from Zach Esquerra to build an 8-1 lead going the final frame.

The Storm plated four runs and had the tying run on first base with one out, but Jayden Darrington (Washington, UT/Desert Hills) grounded into a game-ending double play.

Sam Friend (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial) took the loss for Dixie State allowing three runs on four hits over three innings. David Herd improved to 5-0 for CBU despite allowing six walks.

Conference play resumes for the Storm on Thursday night when the 'Lopes of Grand Canyon University come to Bruce Hurst Field. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
