DSC splits Friday DH with Cal Baptist

ST. GEORGE – Over the last 10 games heading into Friday's doubleheader with California Baptist, the Dixie State baseball team has played five consecutive pairs of games with similar results – lose the opener, win the second game. In the opening games of a critical Pacific West Conference series, the pattern repeated itself once again. The Lancers scored twice in the final frame to take game one 5-4 while Dixie State notched a pair of five-run frames in an 11-9 victory in the nightcap at Bruce Hurst Field.
 
The Red Storm moved its record to 26-14 on the year and 22-12 in the PacWest. CBU, the conference leaders, sit at 35-9, 28-6 PWC.
 
Kevin Odom of CBU empathically opened the series with a leadoff home run off Josh Mooney (American Fork, UT/American Fork) on the fourth pitch of the game. The Lancers threatened with two runners in scoring position before Mooney pitched out of the jam with a strikeout and a fly ball. CBU added a run in the second to lead 2-0 and looked to get to Mooney, who threw 61 pitches over the first two innings.
 
Yuto Kata (Chiba, Japan/Juan Diego (Utah)) pulled the Storm within a run with an RBI single in the bottom half of the second. DSC took the lead in the third – Cedric Johnson (Thatcher, AZ/Thatcher) tied things with a double and Jordan Hanley (Las Vegas. NV/Bonanza) plated two with a sharp single past shortstop for a 4-2 lead.
 
CBU closed within a run in the fifth, but stayed a run down after eight innings thanks to an ironman performance from Mooney. He allowed three runs on seven hits and throwing 147 pitches. He was in line for the win, until CBU capitalized on opportunities in the ninth.
 
Four straight batters reached base scoring the tying run with a Bryan Moore single. After loading the bags, Daniel Zapata (Mesa, AZ/Westwood) walked Cole Bullard on four pitches to force in the go-ahead run. Austin Christiansen (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy (NV)) shut down the rally with a pair of strikeouts. DSC went down in order in the ninth.
 
Eric Wallace limited DSC to one hit over the final six innings to earn the win in relief (5-1).
 
The nightcap saw more runs scored in the first inning than the entire first game. Each club scored five times with solid hitting and timely miscues. Mitch Manning (Kaysville, UT/Davis) was plunked with the bases loaded, Tyson LIttlewood (St. George. UT/Pine View HS) scored on a wild pitch, Darrington singled to cash in two runs and later scored from third on another wild pitch.
 
Another five run frame in the third pushed DSC ahead 10-7. Darrington notched his third RBI with a groundout. Garrett Nash (Draper, UT/Jordan) cleared the bags with a single and fielding error in centerfield. He would later score on a passed ball. Joe Andrade (Yuma, AZ/San Luis ) cashed in the final run with a double in the fourth.
 
Bryce Anderson (Cedar City, UT/Cedar HS) tossed five innings in relief for the win (3-2). Christiansen earned a save in the seventh inning inducing a pair of outs with the tying run at first.
 
The series continues Saturday with a doubleheader at 12 noon.
