BASE: A tale of two different games results in split at HPU

HPU wins pitchers duel, DSC rebounds in offensive slugfest

Box Score

WAIPAHU, Hawaii – Dixie State baseball opened an eight-game road trip through the Hawaiian Islands Friday with a doubleheader split in a pair of one-run games with host Hawaii Pacific University. The Red Storm fell 2-1 in the nine-inning series opener, and then exploded for nine runs in the opening frame of a 12-11 victory in seven innings in the nightcap at Hans L'Orange Park.

With the Pacific West Conference split, Dixie State moved to 22-10 on the year, 18-8 in the league.

Pitching dominated most the first games with strong performances from both starters – DSC's Mike Dedrick (Cedar City, UT/Canyon View) and HPU's Michael Murray. Dixie State took the lead in the fourth inning when Jayden Darrington (Washington, UT/Desert Hills) plated Joe Andrade (Yuma, AZ/San Luis ) with a pinch-hit RBI sacrifice fly to right field.

Dedrick controlled the pace for most of the game. After allowing an infield single with two outs in the second inning, the junior right-hander retired 16 consecutive batters in closing out the Sea Warriors through the seventh.

The Warriors broke through in the eighth with a pair of runs, handing Dedrick his second loss of the year despite allowing two runs on two hits with six strikeouts.

Any lingering frustrations were expelled on HPU in the first inning of the nightcap. Dixie State scored nine runs on six hits and took advantage of two early errors. Yuto Kata (Chiba, Japan/Juan Diego (Utah)) had a two-run single and Cedric Johnson (Thatcher, AZ/Thatcher) blasted a two-run triple to center highlighting the frame.

Tyson Littlewood (St. George. UT/Pine View HS) blasted his team leading fifth homerun in the third inning and Mitch Manning (Kaysville, UT/Davis) doubled home the Storm's final run in the fifth.

Daniel Zapata (Mesa, AZ/Westwood) tossed two innings in relief for the save, his fifth of the year. Austin Christiansen (Las Vegas, NV/Legacy (NV)) earned the victory in relief.

The two teams return to the diamond at Hans L'Orange to close out the four-game series beginning at 6 p.m. Mountain.
