ST. GEORGE – Opening a four-game series Thursday, the Dixie State baseball team hoped to find consistent offense, reliable defense and solid pitching. Two out of three isn't bad. 
 
But a lack of clutch hitting, at key times, led to 24 DSC stranded base runners in a pair of 3-2 final scores against the Urban Knights at Bruce Hurst Field. Mike Dedrick (Cedar City, UT/Canyon View) tossed a quality game in the Storm's win in the opener, but a rally in extra innings fell short as Academy of Art took the nightcap.
 
Dixie State moved to 16-8 on the year and 12-6 within Pacific West Conference play. ART U triumphed for only the second time in 25 games (2-23, 2-16 PWC).
 
Dedrick threw eight frames of two-run, six-hit baseball while matching his season best with six strikeouts. The win improves his season record to 4-1. Daniel Zapata (Mesa, AZ/Westwood) struck out the side in the ninth to earn save number four.
 
The Red Storm scored all of it s run sin the sixth inning. ART U starter Nate Gercken left after one pitch due to a blister. Stefan Henderson entered and walked Tyson Littlewood (St. George. UT/Pine View HS) and Mitch Manning (Kaysville, UT/Davis). Both tagged up after a fly ball from Tyler Slesk (Bellingham, WA/Meridian). Eric Bond (Scottsdale, AZ/Horizon) knocked in Littlewood with a single to center and Jayden Darrington (Washington, UT/Desert Hills) lined an RBI single to center, scoring Manning. Bond scored later on a wild pitch to give DSC a 3-0 lead.
 
Academy cut into the lead with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings. ART left the potential tying run stranded in the ninth at second when Zapata fanned Johnathan Robbins.
 
Dixie State survived the late Knight rallies despite stranding 12 runners and multiple chances throughout the game.
 
In the nightcap, both teams struggle to find runs. ART U struck first with a Niko Leite single. DSC answered with a two-out rally. Garrett Nash (Draper, UT/Jordan) walked, advanced to second base on a balk and scored off a Colton Yack (South Jordan, UT/Bingham) RBI double.
 
DSC had runners in scoring position in the fifth and sixth, but could not find the go-ahead hit.
 
Myles Babitt doubled to center in the seventh pushing ART U ahead in the final inning of regulation. DSC responded, again with two outs, when Joe Andrade (Yuma, AZ/San Luis ) doubled home Yack from first.
 
Henderson immediately struck with a solo home run to center off DSC's Jordon Blanchard (Henderson, NV/Coronado) to lead off the eighth inning.
 
In the subsequent half inning, DSC once again tried to rally with two outs. Yuto Kata (Chiba, Japan/Juan Diego (Utah)) drew a walk and advanced to third on a blooper single from Nash. M. Babitt was called to mound and induced a Yack grounder to end the game. Bryce Hutchings earned the win for the Knights.
 
DSC stranded 12 more runners over eight innings, 10 coming in the final three innings.
 
The four-game series continues Friday with a double header beginning at 1 p.m. at Hurst.
