Offense explodes to take two from Hilo

Yack reaches base safely in all 10 appearances Sunday

ST. GEORGE – Colton Yack (South Jordan, UT/Bingham) appeared at the plate 10 times Sunday in Dixie State's Pacific West Conference doubleheader against Hawaii Hilo. After each plate appearance, Yack found himself in a familiar spot – on base. The junior second baseman went 7-for-7, had three walks, and knocked in five helping the Red Storm to 10-4 and 14-1 victories over the visiting Vulcans.

Dixie State improved to 14-6 overall and 10-4 in PacWest play. Hawaii Hilo dropped to 4-19 (1-13 in PWC) while seeing its current losing string extend to 14 games.

Mike Dedrick (Cedar City, UT/Canyon View) won his third consecutive game (3-1) after allowing an unearned run on four hits over six quality innings in the series opener.

Tyson Littlewood (St. George. UT/Pine View HS) brought home the first three of the Red Storm's runs with singles in the first and third innings, respectively.

After UH Hilo plated a run in the visiting half of the fourth, DSC rebounded with a pair of runs. Yuto Kata (Chiba, Japan/Juan Diego (Utah)) lined a single to score Jordan Hanley (Las Vegas. NV/Bonanza). On the same play, Ammon Zitting (Pleasant Grove. UT/Lone Peak) scored from third after a throwing error from center field.

Mitch Manning (Kaysville, UT/Davis) lined a two-run single highlighting a three-run fifth frame to push the lead to 8-1. Cedric Johnson (Thatcher, AZ/Thatcher) closed out the Storm scoring with an opposite-field homer run down the left field line in the seventh.

Hilo closed with three runs in the ninth before Justin Jarvis (Hurricane. UT/Hurricane) closed out the game with a strikeout.

Dixie State had 13 hits in the opener.

The nightcap did not lack for DSC offense either. On three separate occasions, the Storm scored four runs in an inning in support of Sam Friend (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial). The southpaw struck out five over five innings to notch his fourth win of the year. Jordon Blanchard (Henderson, NV/Coronado) capped the final two scoreless innings scattering one lone hit.

Yack had a pair of doubles and a single for five RBI. Garrett Nash (Draper, UT/Jordan) added a two-run single and blasted his first home run, a three-run shot to left, accounting for his five runs batted in. DSC tallied 14 runs on 16 hits in the nightcap over six innings. UHH was stymied to one run on three hits over seven frames.

The teams meet Monday to complete the four-game series. First pitch has been moved up to 1 p.m. Mountain from Bruce Hurst Field.
