Red Storm stymied by Cal Baptist

ST. GEORGE - Dixie State College saw its seven-game win streak snapped Tuesday night in a 76-68 loss to Cal Baptist inside the Burns Arena.

Sheila Adams (Layton, UT/Layton) led Dixie State with 17 points, but the Storm's loss brings four teams within one-half game of the PWC lead (DSC and Academy of Art tied, Grand Canyon and CBU just behind).

Cal Baptist jumped out to a 10-0 run but saw the Red Storm crawl back and trail 34-32 at the half. DSC ended the half on their own 10-0 run.

The two team traded baskets in game that featured six ties and 14 lead changes. Adams tied the game at 49-49 on a jumper with 9:40 left in the game and Shanae Vaifanua (Hurricane, UT/Hurricane) connected on a crafty move down low to give the Red Storma  51-49 lead with just under nine minutes remaining.

The Lancers outscored DSC in the final eight minutes of the game 25-14 to steal the victory from the Red Storm.


"Obviously dissappointed because we were in the drivers seat. I felt like we werent ready to play tonight," coach Angie Kristensen.

Dixie State shot 37.1 percent from the field managed to hit 8-14 free throws.


Simone Holmes led Cal Baptist with 25 points, she was 11-13 from the free throw line.

For the Red Storm, Becca Thomas (Riverside, CA/Redwood) earned her fourth double-double of the season by scoring 10 points and 11 rebounds. Gabriella Rodriguez (West Jordan, UT/West Jordan) hit three shots from behind the arc and finished in 11 points.

"We need to be prepared for the next four games and we control our own future," concluded coach Kristensen.

The Red Storm and the Lancers do battle again on Saturday night at Van Dyne Gymnasium in Riverside, CA. Tip off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Mountain.
