WBB: #13 Red Storm Open NCAA Tournament with Cal State Monterey Bay

TODAY-The #13-ranked Dixie State College of Utah women's basketball will make their first appearance in school history in the NCAA Tournament at the West Regional in Pomona, CA against the #3 seed Cal State Monterey Bay Otters on Friday March 11th.  Tip-off is scheduled for 12:30 PM PT.

THE RECORDS-Meeting for the first time in school history, the Red Storm are 24-3 overall and finished 14-2 in the PacWest. CSU Monterey Bay is 26-3 overall and finished 20-2 in the CCAA.Both teams are new to the NCAA and the tournament, with Dixie State playing its fifth season and CSU Monterey Bay in its 4th Season.

RED STORM WATCH - Completing its most succesful season in school history, the Red Storm look to make a mark on the NCAA Tournament bracket. Finishing 2nd in the PacWest standings after being tripped up by Hawaii Pacific 53-50 on their Hawaiian road trip,thre Red Stom earned an at-large #6 seed into the West Regional Tournnament. Dixie State has been lead all season by the play of sophomore forward Johnna Brown (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial ) who averages a double dobule with 16.9 ppg and 10.2 rpg. She was also selected to the Daktronics First Team All-West Region for her play. The Red Storm also look to two other players to make a difference. Senior Forward Breann Hill (Harrisburg, PA/McDevitt) averaged 16.7 ppg and 6.3 rpg. Erica Carlson (Tucson, AZ/Canyon del Oro HS) who leads the nation with 4.0 blocks per game and scores 7.9 ppg and grabs 7.9 rpg. Sheila Adams (Layton, UT/Layton) who shoots 36% from three-point range also adds 12.1 ppg. The Red Storm average 18 turnovers per game and allow 57.9 ppg. On the flip side DSC will score 78.1 ppg (12th NCAA) and likes to play an active defense that will shut down opponents on the inside. The Red Storm are averaging 6.2 (1st in NCAA) blocks per game and shoot 45.3 percent (16th NCAA) from the field.

Red Storm Fast Break tidbits :
Johnna Brown (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial ) and Breann Hill (Harrisburg, PA/McDevitt) were named this morning to the PacWest All Conference First Team. Hill also earned Newcomer of the Year Honors. Erica Carlson (Tucson, AZ/Canyon del Oro HS) was a 2nd team selection and Sheila Adams (Layton, UT/Layton) garnered Honorable Mention accolades.

CA/Beaumont)) Leader is Jessica Carver with 788 career points.
Brown was also named to Daktronics First Team West Region and Hill was a 2nd team selection.
24 wins, the most in DSC history....even dating back to the junior college days.
With their final home win against Notre Dame de Namur, the Red Storm have extended their home winning streak at Burns Arena to 21 straight....last loss to Fort Lewis College 74-84 on 11/28/09


SCOUTING CSU MONTEREY BAY- The Otters won the regular season title in the CCAA and held the number one ranking in the West Region poll going into the final week. But a 59-53 loss to Cal Poly Pomona dropped them to the #3 seed in the tournament. Having a 26-3 record on the year and without question one of the most successful in  school history, the Otters have the #1 ranked scoring defense in the NCAA at 50.8 ppg. Averaging on 63.3 ppg, CSUMB likes to slow the game down and they work very efficiently. With no players averaging in double figures, Julie Huerung scoes 9.9 ppg and 6.8 rpg. They play 10 players who average over 14 minutes a game. They shoot 40.8 percent from the field and get most of their points from the paint or three point range. They dont score a great deal from mid range jumpers.
