ST. GEORGE – In one of the most physical and energetic matches of the season, Dixie State and Grand Canyon battled in what will be remembered as a Pacific West Conference instant classic.

Nine yellow cards, one red card and nearly 99 minutes of action on the pitch ended with Grand Canyon's Cordero Young netting the game-winning goal. The Lopes defeated Dixie State 1-0 at Hansen Stadium.

The Red Storm dropped its third straight match (8-7-2, 7-4 PWC), while the Lopes gained more momentum toward a potential at-large berth into the NCAA tournament (13-4-1, 9-2-1 PWC).

A loss in the record book should not diminish the outstanding performance displayed by DSC goaltender Tyler Walters (Ogden, UT/Ben Lomand). The sophomore made numerous athletic saves including an adrenaline-boosting block on a GCU penalty kick try with two seconds left in the first half. Walters made nine saves on the night.

Young found the right side of the net off a Saeed Robinson pass at 98:53 to push the Lopes to victory.

Senior midfielder Nyle Ortiz (Layton, UT/Layton) led Dixie State with five shots while Alex Lawhun3 and (Draper, UT/Alta)Tyler Arbuckle# each added three shots.

Dixie State travels to Riverside, Calif., on Saturday for the regular season finale with the Lancers of California Baptist. Action begins at 4 p.m. Mountain.

NOTES: Junior midfielder Tyler Albretsen (Pleasant View, UT/Weber) had two yellow cards leading to the Red Storm playing a man down from the 78th minute on… Four seniors played their last match at Hansen Stadium – Nyle Ortiz (Layton, UT/Layton), Clayton Alexander (Issaquah, WA/Issaquah/Brighton), Zac Hales (Saint George, UT/Dixie) and Arnaldo Anaya (Saint George, UT/Snow Canyon). Hales was the first ever signee for the Dixie State men's soccer program under head coach Danny Ortiz.
