Adams Leads Red Storm Win Over Alaska Fairbanks

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – The Dixie State College women's basketball team opened their 2011-12 season with 77-62 win over University of Alaska Fairbanks tonight in Fairbanks.
 
With the score tied at 13 and trading baskets for the first eight minutes of the game, the Red Storm used a 14-5 run on a Gabriella Rodriguez (West Jordan, UT/West Jordan) jumper with 7:37 left in the first half to lead 27-18.
 
The Red Storm (1-0) would maintain their lead thru the remainder of the half and lead by as many as twelve points. Junior center Becca Thomas (Riverside, CA/Redwood) started 5-5 from the floor for 10 points in the half and redshirt junior guard Erica Hayes (East Palo Alto, CA/Menlo-Atherton) was 4-4 with 11 points. That gave Dixie State a 43-34 lead at the half, where DSC shot 60 percent from the field in the first half.
 
Leading the way for the Red Storm was senior guard Sheila Adams (Layton, UT/Layton) who had a game high 21 points. She chipped in 13 second half points to lead DSC to victory.
 
After taking the lead with 12 minutes remaining in the first half, DSC would not relinquish the lead. They would build a lead by as many as seventeen points.
 
Five Red Storm players scored in double-figures tonight. Adams led the way with 21, Hayes and Thomas finished with 14 and Chanel Maxey (Anaheim, CA/Canyon) and Kirsten Marie Liana (Honolulu, HI/Farrington) added 10 a piece. DSC would shoot 53.7 percent from the field and win the rebounding battle 40-39.
 
For Alaska Fairbanks (0-1), Nicole Bozek and Taylor Altenburg each had fourteen points for the Nanooks. UAF was held to just 28.3 percent from the floor.
