DSC tries to avenge last week's loss on the road

Storm Seek Series Split with Antelopes

 

UP NEXT: Dixie State College of Utah battles the visiting Antelopes of Grand Canyon University inside the Burns Arena on Saturday, February 6 at 7:30pm.

 

THE RECORDS: DSC enters the game with a 12-4 record after losing at Grand Canyon last Saturday 82-80. Dixie State shot the ball well – over 60 percent – but surrendered 20 offensive rebounds. The Red Storm are 7-0 in the Burns Arena this year. Grand Canyon sports a 10-13 record and a four-game win streak. Five Lopes players scored in double figures last weekend against DSC.

 

ALL-TIME SERIES: Dixie State holds a 7-2 advantage in eight games played against Grand Canyon. Both losses have come in Phoenix – last Saturday 82-80 and a non-conference game on Jan. 23, 2009, 78-64. DSC won both games played in the Burns Arena last year.

RED STORM WATCH: Tom Whitehead (St. George, UT/Dixie) leads the team in scoring average at a 15.4 point per game clip. Donovan Plunkett (Oroville, CA/Las Plumas) (13.9) and Andy Palmer (St. George. UT/Pine View) (11.2) also average double figures. Freshman Zach Robbins (Upland, CA/Upland) paces the club pulling down 6.5 rebounds a game with Palmer (5.4) and Whitehead (5.1) following. DSC averages 73.6 points a game shooting 47.7% FG while allowing 66.5 points to opponents.

·         OVER 50% WITH A LOSS – Last Saturday's game was the first time Dixie State lost shooting over 50% from the field since February 2, 2008 – a 52-47 loss at NDNU

·         MILESTONE - With six assists against NDNU, Adam Ross (Torrance. CA/North Torrance ) became the fifth DSC player to reach the 100 Assist Club. He joins four former Dixie State players (Dan Stock, Ryan Sanchez (Ogden. UT/Fremont), Bowie Jeffs (Castle Dale. UT/Emery) & Ben Hartman (Santa Clara. UT/Snow Canyon)).

·         MILESTONE - Andy Palmer (St. George. UT/Pine View) eclipsed 1,000 minutes in his Dixie State career playing 23 minutes against NDNU. Palmer has played 1,002 minutes in 42 games at Dixie State.

·         WITHIN REACH – Andy Palmer (St. George. UT/Pine View) needs 1 rebound to reach 200 career, 84 points for 500 career, 38 field goals for 200 career; Tom Whitehead (St. George, UT/Dixie) needs 39 points for 500 career, 30 rebounds for 200 career, 42 assists for 100 career, 37 three-pointers for 100 career, 9 blocked shots for 50 career; Nick Howard (Sandy. UT/Jordan) needs 13 field goals for 100 career, 17 free throws mad for 100 career

 

SCOUTING GRAND CANYON: Everything about the 2009-2010 GCU Antelopes is new. New head coach, new players, and a newly renovated gymnasium are the highlights of the rejuvenated program. Seven Division-I transfers, three freshman who turned down D-I scholarships and three more first-year players complete the Lopes roster. Weber State transfer T.J. Benson leads the team in scoring at 9.8 PPG, but he is followed by six other players who average six or more points a contest. Justin Wesolowski pulls down 6.2 rebounds while Gaby Ngoundjo, from Cameroon, rips 5.6 boards a game. Russ Pennell, former interim head coach at the University of Arizona, is in his first year at the helm in Phoenix. He was 21-14 at Arizona and led the Wildcats to a Sweet 16 appearance in the NCAA Tournament last season.
