Adams Nets 16 in Red Storm Win Over College of Saint Mary

SAINT GEORGE, UT-December 18, 2010-Sheila Adams (Layton, UT/Layton) hit four three-pointers and scored a team high 16 points to lead the Dixie State College women's basketball team to a 58-42 victory over NAIA College of Saint Mary (NE) at the Burns Arena on the first day of the DSC Holiday Tournament.

The Red Storm (9-1 Overall, 0-0 PWC) managed to shoot only 31.9 percent from the floor and attempted a school record 32 three-pointers as a team in the win. Despite a night of poor shooting, Dixie State forced 28 CSM turnovers that lead to 26 points.

Playing without leading scorer Johnna Brown (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial ), who was out with flu like symptoms, and Breann Hill (Harrisburg, PA/McDevitt) only played one minute when she left the game with a finger injury after attempting her only shot. She will be a game time decision tomorrow.

The Red Storm by seven points with 16:08 left in the first half but took the lead for good on a Rachel Gines (South Jordan, UT/Bingham ) (4 points, 4 rebounds) lay-up with 8:26 left in the half. Dixie State built a 32-19 advantage going in the half.

Spinks, Brigette shoots
The spark came from the DSC bench; scoring 25 points, lead by the play of Brigette Spinks (Washington, UT/Pine View). Spinks scored eights points and eight rebounds in 22 minutes of action. Shanae Vaifanua (Hurricane, UT/Hurricane) added eight points helping build the second half advantage to 23 points with 6:02 remaining.

The Red Storm outrebounded CSM 45-40 with 17 of those coming on the offensive end.

Karyn Bixler scored a game high 17 points to lead CSM (4-8, 0-0 MCAC). Jennifer Perkins also added 10 points. They managed to shoot 34.1 percent from the field.

With the win, the Red Storm will play William Penn University at 3:00 PM in the winner's bracket of the DSC Holiday Tournament.

William Penn 83, Doane College 59 – The Lady Statesmen (10-4) of William Penn University forced 32 turnovers with a stifling press to defeat Doane College (3-10) in game one of the DSC Holiday Tournament in the Burns Arena.

Rachel Butler led the way for William Penn with 14 points and nine rebounds while Samantha Darling chipped in 14 points. Christa Subbert and Orielle Thomas each had 11 points.

Cheryl Braithwait paced the Tigers with 16.
