Four Score in Double Figures as DSC Downs Carroll College

Griffon Jones has 11/10 in double-double

BOX SCORE: DSC 81, CARROLL 77

ST. GEORGE, UTAH (November 8) –
Historically, matchups between Dixie State College and Carroll College on the hardwood have been closely contested battles of will and determination. The latest installment on Monday night inside the Burns Arena proved that history certainly does repeat itself. In a game where both team's biggest lead was six points, Dixie State held off the talented Saints 81-77 in an exhibition contest for DSC and a regular-season game for Carroll.

The Red Storm had four players score in double figures to improve their exhibition record to 2-1. Tom Whitehead (St. George, UT/Dixie) had four three-points and made seven-of-eight free throws for 19 points. Jeremiah Barnes (Compton, CA/Los Altos) added 13 while Donovan Plunkett (Oroville, CA/Las Plumas) scored 12 and added five assists. Griffon Jones (Cheney, WA/Cheney) finished with a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Whitehead and Plunkett combined to score the Storm's first 12 points, but it took a Solomon Jensen (Centerville, UT/Viewmont) lay-in with 12:42 remaining to tie the game for the fifth time.

The Saints (3-1) would seize control over the next seven minutes. They built the lead to 35-29 with a Sam Cartmell triple. DSC began to chip away with free throws and eventually take a slim one-point lead, 38-37, into the half after Maurice Cole (Norwalk, CA/Santa Fe) slashed to the bucket for a last-second lay-up.

Carroll's Nick Jones became the hot hand from distance early in the second half leading the Saints to a 54-50 lead. A see-saw battle swayed leads and ties back and forth before forward Andy Garland's three-ball gave Carroll what turned out to be their final lead 72-71 with 3:42 remaining.

Dixie's response came with a 6-0 run thanks for a pair of Barnes' field goals and two crucial foul shots by Everton Araujo (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Torquato Caleiro). Two defensive stops and four subsequent free throws iced the win for the Red Storm.

Garland led all scorers with 20 points. Chase Godecke filled the box score with a 13-point, 10 rebound effort.

Dixie State edged Carroll College in nearly every statistical category except one, three-point percentage. The Saints hit an impressive 13 three-pointers at a 36% clip compared the DSC's 28% (4-14). Dixie notched their highest field-goal percentage of the exhibition season at 45.9-percent. DSC won the battle of the boards 38-36.

The regular season begins Friday when Dixie State College participates in the Disney Division-II West Coast Tip-Off Classic in Anaheim, CA. First up for DSC is Alaska-Anchorage at 1:00pm Mountain time in the Classic's opening game. The Red Storm will also face U.C. San Diego on Saturday at 6:00pm and Lewis University on Sunday at 12 noon. Every game in which DSC participates can be heard live with John Potter on KXDS 91.3FM and Network1Sports.com.
